1. Enforce breaks.
Surprisingly, there are some young workers who won’t take their breaks or do it at the wrong time. Either they are trying too hard to impress you (the boss) or have a warped view of what it means to work. You, of course, know that employees who break during the day – at the right time – stay refreshed and as a result work better. Help the young people out at your job by making sure they comply with federal laws involving breaks and stay on schedule.
2. Ban cell phones.
One of the biggest ways to increase productivity amongst workers under the age of thirty is to ban cell phones. From the games to the texting, most young employees abuse them. Make it clear that the only time it’s all right to be on the phone is during an emergency call involving a child or elderly parent. Facebook, Twitter, Myspace and other social networks serve as distractions for youthful workers. They often dwindle away precious work time on these sites interacting with friends or even other co-workers. Put your foot down and limit Internet usage. They may get upset initially, but explain it is for the overall good of the company.
4. Clarify any duties.
Increase productivity amongst workers under the age of thirty by giving them clear instructions about their duties. What does this mean? Be sure they understand their job and what you expect from them. Watch them work for a while and if they appear confused, tell them again. For some people, this may be a weekly task until they get it.
5. Offer training classes.
Help develop your under thirty crew by getting them into a few training classes. Make sure they are ones that will strengthen their weaknesses and benefit the company. Also, try to find training classes that the company is willing to pay for. Most young people struggle financially, so they may not be able to pay for an expensive training course. Keep in mind that the additional training will give these employees the knowledge necessary to excel on the job.
