Movies are almost never as great as the books they originated from but it’s still fun to see how others interpret the very same pages you read and how they appear on screen. I love to watch the Harry Potter films. I’ve read all seven books so I absolutely cannot wait to see how they create the final film(s). Even the new Twilight saga. The first movie was awful, the second was considerably better, but I still like to watch them in order to see how others interpret what I read. Here are three of my favorite books that I hope someday will turn into major motion pictures.
The Host by Stephanie Meyer
This is the same author that created the Twilight series. This book is a more mature version of unrequited love. Not to give too much away, it is a novel about ‘souls’ of other beings taking over the human body and using it as their host. In this book a soul takes over a host body but cannot seem to shake the person whose body she is controlling. This is a book about the struggle of mankind to not be used as hosts and killed.
I would have Reese Witherspoon play the main female role of Melanie’s host and Katie Holmes as Melanie. I would have Ben Affleck and Orlando Bloom play the two lead male roles of Jared and Ian.
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
This is the first book in a four part series. (Uglies, Pretties, Specials, and Extras) This book is about the future world and how social rank is decided. People are considered ugly up until a certain age where they receive plastic surgery and become beautiful and popular. Do they simply operate on your features to make you ‘pretty’ or do they take away for free will? By they I mean the specials who seem to control everything. Everyone desires to be a bubble-headed-pretty but they change more than the way you look.
This would be an excellent film starring Emma Watson. She is by no means an ‘ugly’ but movie make-up could make her a little more fit for the character. This would be a film the individuals from High School Musical or Hair Spray would star in because they would fit the age group and play the parts well.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
This is a book about fighting for your life starting at age twelve. It’s the future and the U.S. has broken apart to colonies due to wars. The government is in control and a as a reminder they send children from 12-18 to fight for their lives in something called ‘The Hunger Games’. In this book a girl named Prim is chosen, she is only twelve and as such her older sister Katniss takes her place in the Hunger Games risking her life to save her young sister. She is forced to kill to gain the rights to her life as the government throws in torturous obstacles to keep viewers amused.
This would be a great film for Dakota Fanning. She’s young enough to fit the part but there’s something cold about her appearance that would be required of the young Katniss Everdeen of district 12. Gale would be best played by Ryan Gosling and Peta would be best played by Justin Long.
I’ve heard rumors that the Hunger Games may turn into a motion picture. This would be exciting but I fear it would have to be rated R due to the concept but the book really isn’t very descriptive in the form of violence. A sequel novel has been released called ‘Catching Fire’ which would also make an excellent book that would be a good sequel.
