Books About Witches Are Starting to Become Popular

Paranormal romances and urban fantasy have been overwhelmingly popular in recent years. If you are enjoying the trend but want to read about witches rather than fanged protagonists there are some great books for your entertainment. There is something for everyone in the sub genre. Try out a cozy mystery, paranormal romance or urban fantasy.

The Ophelia and Abby Mysteries by Shirley Damsgaard is a series that focuses on Ophelia Jensen, a small town librarian that wishes she could have a simple life. However, Ophelia and her grandmother Abby are not as ordinary as Ophelia would like. They come from a long line of witches and while Abby is still practicing her healing arts Ophelia wishes her psychic ability would simply disappear. Ophelia is sassy and Abby is sweet but both are stubborn. Events conspire in each book to help Ophelia grow as a person and a witch. There are murder mysteries, family secrets and romantic interests to keep the series strong and entertaining. The series begins with Witch Way to Murder.

The Bewitching Mysteries series by Madelyn Alt starts with The Trouble With Magic. Maggie O’Neil was an ordinary girl with a quite life, until she accepts a job as a clerk in an antique shop. Soon she discovers that her new friend and employer Felicity is a witch. Murder mysteries, magic, friendship and romantic relationships combine in this witty and enchanting series.

Christine Feehan offers the seven book Drake Sisters series. This paranormal romance series tells the story of seven sisters that just happen to be born witches. Each sister has her own strengths and fears, and man that can be a perfect partner. The series has magic, mystery, love and the power of family as the major driving points of each novel. The series begins with Magic in the Wind.

Kim Harrison writes The Hollows series, also known as the Rachel Morgan series. This series is for those that want to read about a witch main character but do not mind a variety of paranormal characters playing major roles in the story. Rachel Morgan’s story begins in Dead Witch Walking. She is a supernatural bounty hunter for a government agency that polices all the supernatural beings. She discovers that the system is not as ethical as she though and strikes out on her own. She needs to evade assassins and find a way to survive a vampire roommate that finds her slightly too attractive for everyone’s piece of mind. Death threats, unexpected alliances, mystery and strong elements of urban fantasy collide and expand as the series continues. Be prepared to see just about every possible supernatural creature at some point in this unique and thrilling series.

For readers that are looking for a male perspective and do not mind other paranormal creatures as side characters there is Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files. Starting with Storm Front we met Harry Dresden, a perpetually down on his luck wizard for hire. He has more magical power than his peers and is therefore disliked or distrusted by many. His ethical code, good heart and smart mouth get him into as many bad situations as the people that hire him. This is an enthralling and thrilling series with a little bit of everything.
