Dark Lover is the first book in the series called The Black Dagger Brotherhood by an incredibly talented author, J. R. Ward. J. R. Ward is also a New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author who writes erotic and paranormal romances. Dark Lover thrilled me from the start and throughout the whole series, has captivated me. At the time I started reading this fascinating author, I was in the mood to read paranormal romance and I decided to read her books. I normally do not like to read vampire books, but once I decided to read her books, I was, as I said, captivated and intrigued. She has away of writing that kept me wanting to read more.
Dark Lover is the story of Wrath, who is considered by the Vampire race to be the king, since he is the only purebred vampire left on the planet. Sure, there are other vampires in the world, but none of them can claim to be pure vampire through and through. There is only two things wrong with Wrath. He does not want to be the king, just a warrior who can fight the evil in the world. The other thing that is wrong with Wrath is that he is blind, not totally blind, but nonetheless he is considered blind. He can fight like no other can and is a fierce one. No one can match him in a battle. His brothers, the other vampires who were bred to be warriors and are part of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, regard him as their leader and the king, no matter what he says. They look to him to lead them in the battle that exists and known only to them. There is a war going on between the vampire world and a race called the Lesser Society. The Lessers are actually slayers but different in every way.
The Lessers are actually dead but kept alive by an entity called The Omega. He is similar to the Scribe Virgin, who made the vampires, but that is where the similarities end. The Omega can kill and bring you back to life. Wrath hates the Lessers more than anyone since they were the ones who killed his parents many many years ago. He wants to destroy the Lessers and he will do just about anything to make that happen. He has six warriors who have been bred and trained to do just that, with him also doing the fighting. That is until one of his warriors is killed in an explosion. He also finds out that the warrior has a daughter who has no knowledge of their race or the fact that she is also half vampire. She also has no knowledge that she is about to go through a transformation that will change everything that she has ever known.
It is up to Wrath himself to help her through the time of transformation and claim her as his own. It won’t be easy but Wrath knows that he must do what he has to make sure she lives through what is to come. If he doesn’t help her, she could very well die and the vampire world would lose much more. Beth Randall has no idea what is happening or going on, but she knows one thing, she is not happy with what is going on. Then she meets Wrath and she feels that her life is about to be turned upside down. She is very much close to that truth. As time passes, what started out as mentor and student, quickly becomes more and both their lives will be turned more than upside down. And trouble also heads their way as they are consumed by something that they have never experienced before.
