Blue zones are cities around the world, where many people live to be over 100 years old; they are healthy and almost ageless. Several studies have been done to look at the lifestyles of the residence of these blue zone cities. The best known study was done in 2005, by national geographic researchers. Research was done in four cities; Okinawa, Japan, Sardinia, Italy, Loma Linda, Calif. and Nicoya peninsula, Costa Rica. In 2009, cities around the world began to adopt the blue zone diet in hopes of longevity. But residents of these well-known blue zones have more than a rich vegetarian type diet. Their life style choices and their environment is what give these residence longevity, and ageless benefits of better health and youthful appearance.
The blue zone diet
The blue zone diet consists of mainly fruits, vegetables and vegetable protein with an occasional small portion of pork. All food is home grown in organic style, they eat no processed foods. Everything ingested is eaten or drank for the benefit of the body, not just to satisfy the feeling of being hungry. Their low calorie intake of low fat, low cholesterol food increases their health benefits. They drink red wine, herbal teas and lots of natural mineral water. Meals are eaten usually with family and friends; gathering together several times a day to eat a relaxing meal or for afternoon tea.
Residences of blue zone areas, do not over work their bodies, they believe in moderate natural exercise. High impact exercise contributes to stress muscles, torn ligaments, and worn joints. Their natural exercise consists of low impact natural exercise such as walking, gardening, meditation and yoga. Afternoon naps are practiced by most of the residence.
Socialization is an important part of the blue zone life style. Every person in the cities small population; work together as a family. Senior residence; the elders of the community are treated with honor and respect. Working together in a mutual harmony reduces community stress. This isn’t to say that they do not have quarrels; but respect is given to each ones opinions and wishes. Most family events are done together within the community. They enjoy music, dancing, worshiping and eating together.
One of the benefits of their environment is the air and soil has been found to have less pollution then the surrounding cities. Also, contributing to this is the residence main choice of transportation is walking from place to place there is less pollution from cars.
