Ask every fashionista you know what having some vintage clothing and accessories would mean to your wardrobe and they will tell you it’s a “must have”. But what is the real definition of “vintage” in regards to fashion and what is it really when it comes to clothing and accessories?
“Vintage” basically means that “something” is from a different era, something from the past. It need not necessarily mean that it has to be “used” or “old”. More importantly, most people think that the only places you can get authentic vintage clothes are from the thrift store and garage sales. Although the notion is correct, there are other places to get vintage clothing and accessories. The “Vintage!” fashion statement need not mean you have to wear authentic clothes and accessories from a certain era. You can go for the “vintage” look with brand spanking new items. The key on how to be able to pull off the vintage look greatly lies on your “theme”. You can not mix “pin up” with “retro” and wear “Cloche and Flapper” accessories. Pick one era and stick with that era.
“Online Shopping” is a girl’s best friend when it comes to getting the “vintage” look right. Best of all, you can shop and compare prices without having to run all over town. When you shop online, it is best that you get to know the company’s size chart. Personally, I also look into the company’s contact info. Know that there is a phone number you can call or an active e-mail that you can contact them at just in case there is an “issue” that you need to talk to them about. I suggest that you call the number they have provided online and e-mail them prior to purchasing anything. In that way, you know exactly what you are getting. This is what I do when I purchase anything that is “authentic”.
Here are three of my favorite “vintage” looks and where to get them online.
The “Flapper”. If you wish to have that classic yet fun “Flapper” look for a night out with friends, you can wear a fringe dress, a nice simple black heels and some marcasite jewelry. A nice little black satin purse bejeweled with beads and sequence would give you a very stylish look without trying too hard to make “your statement”. Try the black and nude lace dress from Unique Vintage. I know the price tag is hard to swallow. Use it as a base and look for similar looks. I chose this dress because the design is quite versatile. You can dress it up as a costume or have it in your wardrobe and wear it anytime you feel like it.
Art Deco. To tell you the truth I love simplicity. As it may seem so subtle, it speaks so loudly. This is when you allow the simplicity of a solid colored dress accompanied by a very nice jewelry set talk for itself. Here’s an example. A nice ice blue evening dress matched with art deco bracelet that has an ice blue accent will set the tone for a vintage look without trying too hard. Classy and stylish. You can’t go wrong with that! Click here to look at the entire jewelry set.Pin Up. There is so much fun to be had with the “pin up” look. I especially like this look during the day and especially during Summer time. Check out this cute dress called “Lookie Lookie Here Comes Cookie”. Dress it up with matching ball type beads that matches the colors of the dress. Oh so yummy! It’s guaranteed you are going to be a head turner wearing this ensemble!
