Home schooling your child requires continued participation of the students as well as the parents. To help your child along with their home school, there are many software programs out there that can be utilized.
When I originally started out doing this article I was going to try to find 10 of the best software programs for homeschooling. However, in my experience as a homeschooler, I did not want to mislead anyone as I’ve bought software before that was simply not worth the money. I only wanted to share what I have used and what I know to be good.
I will include books and paces that I have utilized as well as software for homeschool.
When we get to the books I will show you a great place to find them all in one place. It’s the most inexpensive place I could find. I use it myself as well.
The first one I’m going to tell you about is actually highly sought after by Christians and non-Christians alike and has won high rewards. It is called Switched-on Schoolhouse.
Switched-on Schoolhouse is a Bible based curriculum but it serves every student grades 3-12 and in all subjects needed for graduation. Some people including myself feels it has even more to offer than regular public schooling with a wide variety of electives.
They have just recently released Switched-on Schoolhouse 2010 which has been highly anticipated by many. It is number one according to their website, when it comes to Christian based home schooling. The site says “it is the best selling curriculum”.
You can test drive and download areas of this curriculum so you’ll know what you are getting. Also be sure to ask a lot of questions.
You can usually buy a complete 5 subject set for around $340.00 and if you buy them separately or need add ons they can run about $73.00 each.
Although many curriculum comes with alternative languages, in my experience I’ve had better luck with Rosetta Stone. It has a wide variety of languages and your child just might want to learn more than what your curriculum has to offer.
I would also say it’s a good investment for the entire family. Many of us work out with the public and since we do face many people who cannot speak English, imagine the possibilities if you could assist them directly.
Here is a list of all the languages you can learn. This would be great for any students that plan on traveling to different countries as well.
Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Danish, Dutch, English (American), English (British), Filipino (Tagalog), French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Indonesian, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Pashto, Persian (Farsi), Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish (Latin America), Spanish (Spain), Swahili, Swedish, Thai Turkish, Vietnamese, Welsh.
As you can see it goes way beyond what most curriculum has to offer. It isn’t cheap by any means but it is the number one facet of learning new languages. Not only because it makes it easy to learn, but because of the variety to choose from. You’ll have to go to their website to get a more clear understanding of the cost as it ranges quite a bit.
Homeschool Minder is great software to help the parents stay organized. It helps you manage daily school activities, lesson plans, grades, attendance, chores, appointments, field trips, and much more!
You should check with the home school curriculum you buy because sometimes it is already included in with your curriculum and there is no need to buy double. However if you feel like what yot received with your curriculum was not enough this would be a great choice.
Math Tutor Educational Software is some great software that gives middle school and high school students extra help in math they might need. Sometimes there are students who just have a hard time learning math and need an extra boost with a different approach.
I don’t think they should ignore what they have in their curriculum and just do the tutoring, but use it in addition to the curriculum. It may seem like extra work, but it will be worth it in the end, because if you plan on going to college, math is a subject that you will definitely need to know. You don’t want to get to college and have to take basic math all over again.
For one thing you are not going to get it deep down into your brain in a college course as you would in several months and years at home. Sometimes you can get to college and test out of math subjects and not even have to take them. Now wouldn’t that be ideal?
Typing Master is great for home schooled students. Again, make sure it’s not already in a curriculum you buy, if you buy curriculum that has many subjects all in one. Typing master is not only great for students, but it’s also great for adults.
Along with what I’ve mentioned there are several other language learning softwares out there as well as tutoring in certain areas. I would be repeating myself if I went on to list more. So I felt like a list of 5 was enough to get you started.
For another list of home school curriculum that is not necessarily software, but you may like instead, you can find at Penny Wise Learning. Their prices are good too. Many of them I’ve used, including the A.C.E. Program. Which is a very popular pace program used in churches and homes.
Some of them also include:
DVD Music Instruction
Bob Jones Homeschool
Feel free to comment on more software programs, but I have not used enough software in my experience as a homeschooler to be able to recommend more than 5. I’m also more biased as I only seek Christian software when it comes to the actual curriculum.
