Unlike neighboring Thailand, where electronics are imported so expensive, Malaysia manufactures many electronics locally, so prices are cheap. Every time I visit Kuala Lumpur, and I go five times a year, I buy electronics to bring back to Thailand and always get good deals. There are many excellent places to buy cheap electronics in Kuala Lumpur but three that, most Malaysians will tell you, are the best. While nowhere near the size of electronics malls in Bangkok, these three still have a lot to offer. Plus, they’re all close together so no need to travel around half the city.
Plaza Low Yat – Known as the best place to buy electronics in Kuala Lumpur and also said to be the biggest electronics center in Malaysia, Plaza Low Yat is where you want to look first. Located behind the Melia Hotel and only a three minute walk from Imbi monorail station, it’s also easy to get to.
On the ground floor and in the basement of Plaza Low Yat is where you’ll find the cafes and restaurants dear to many Malaysians hearts. There’s a good food court, several cafes, a Starbucks and a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf as well as several snack shops and Malaysian eateries.
On the top five floors is where you’ll find most of the electronics, although you will see several mobile phone and MP3 player stalls, an Apple shop, and a few other computer stores on the ground floor. On the upper ground floor through to the top floor is where most of the electronics shops are. Cell phone stores, phone accessory stores, camera shops, computer game stores, and computer and IT stores are up here and their prices are cheap. At most shops at Plaza Low Yat, you can also bargain and will likely get a lower price or extra products thrown in for free.
Imbi Plaza – Close to Plaza Low Yat is Imbi Plaza. A much older and slightly run-down looking mall, it’s still a wonderful place for cheap electronics. Stalls are more crammed together here, but if you look carefully you’ll find cheap prices on computers (look for Dell, Acer, Hewlett Packard and Sony) and computer peripherals (and of course games and software), cell phones, digital cameras and MP3 players. Shop owners are pushy but, if you make it clear from the beginning you’re just price shopping and ‘may’ buy, you’ll have a much nicer experience.
Some tourists have asked me if shopping malls like Imbi Plaza really do have cheap prices or would they be better in Singapore, the answer is a resounding “Yes.” Buying anything at Imbi Plaza, you’re just about guaranteed a cheaper shopping experience than any place in Singapore.
Sungei Wang Plaza – Another of my favorite shopping malls and a perfect place to buy cheap electronics in Kuala Lumpur is Sungei Wang Plaza. Located just around the corner from Imbi Plaza and right across the small street from Plaza Low Yat, Sungei Wang has several floors selling mobile phones, brand name digital cameras (both low and high-end), computers and computer peripherals, software and computer games, MP3 players and on and on. Shops are spread all over the mall with the majority concentrated on floors one and two. Again, don’t forget to bargain, and don’t miss the more than 100 cafes and restaurants located around the mall when you need a drink or a meal.
