The Buffalo Bills of the early 1990s are the best NFL team ever. In case you aren’t aware, the Buffalo Bills played in four consecutive Super Bowls (XXV, XXVI, XXVII, and XXVIII) following the 1990 to 1993 seasons, the only time that’s happened in Super Bowl history.
Appearing in four consecutive Super Bowls is a feat no other NFL team has achieved, which sets the Bills apart as an elite team, the best football team in NFL history. The fact that the Bills lost each of those consecutive Super Bowls is another feat which marks them for greatness. This may sound contradictory, declaring a team that lost four Super Bowls as the best NFL team ever, but it’s not really.
What makes the Buffalo Bills the best football team ever?
There are some who say that losing a Super Bowl is such a blow to a team’s confidence and morale that making it back to the game the next year is much more difficult than getting there the first time. And history gives some credence to this statement.
In 44 years of Super Bowl history (through 2010), only four teams lost a Super Bowl and played in the Super Bowl the next year: Dallas Cowboys, Super Bowl V and VI; Miami Dolphins, Super Bowl VI and VII; Minnesota Vikings, Super Bowl VIII and IX; Denver Broncos, Super Bowl XXI and XXII. Of those four teams, only two of them, the Cowboys and the Dolphins, won their second Super Bowl appearance.
To lose the Super Bowl, then, four times, consecutively, would seem to create a wall of disappointment, doubt and uncertainty that no team could overcome, and any team that did would have to have something that no other NFL team possessed. This is one of the reasons that the Buffalo Bills are the best NFL team ever.
The year after the first Super Bowl loss (a 1-point loss to the New York Giants), with the disappointment of the loss fresh on their minds, this team came back with a winning record, won their way through the playoffs, and returned to play in Super Bowl XXVI, which they then lost by 13 points to the Washington Redskins.
The next year, again facing disappointment, doubt, and uncertainty, magnified by a second consecutive loss, the Bills once again played their way through the season and the playoffs, and made it to a third Super Bowl. This is the kind of consistency and excellence that marks the Bills as the best football team in NFL history.
Determination to win-and prove themselves-must have been raging in every player’s mind, but there also had to be a lot of questions, the questions that analysts and fans were asking: do the Buffalo Bills have what it takes? Are they good enough to win the Super Bowl? Can they do it, or will they lose-again?
Super Bowl XXVII must have been devastating to the Bills, because not only did they lose their third Super Bowl in a row, they were blown out of the Rose Bowl IN a 52-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
A score like that in any game, much less the biggest game of all, can be a team breaker. But not for the Buffalo Bills, because once again, in the 1993-94 NFL season, they made it to the Super Bowl, the fourth consecutive time. If this isn’t a team worthy of being called the best NFL team ever, none is.
By this time, the name Scott Norwood and the term wide-right had come to signify the Bills, as did the universal symbol of choking, a hand to the throat. Undaunted, or perhaps daunted, but unwilling to show it, the Buffalo Bills came to Super Bowl XXVIII, ready to win-and to win against the team that had walloped them the year before.
The outcome of Super Bowl XXVIII is well known: the Bills lost. Four Super Bowl losses in a row. But it isn’t those four Super Bowl losses that define this team, and it certainly isn’t what makes it the best NFL team ever.
What gives them that title is the grit, the determination, the fire, the ability to stay focused and keep on playing at a level high enough to make it to the Super Bowl year after year.
In order to lose four consecutive Super Bowls, you have to play in four consecutive Super Bowls, and the Buffalo Bills are the only NFL team to have accomplished that.
And that is what makes them the best NFL team ever.
