Downtown Tulsa provides a shocking contrast with much of the surrounding countryside. A city in the midst of this Midwestern state, Tulsa offers its citizens with cultured entertainment options including its own symphony and ballet, both renowned for their excellence. However, besides these high quality performing art companies, Tulsa also offers its citizens a great variety of delicious food services, with many wonderful restaurants located right in downtown Tulsa itself. While these establishments are great dining opportunities any night of the week, local informed Tulsans will be quick to let a new-comer to the area know that some nights are far better than others to frequent certain restaurants. Special offers on certain nights of the week will save you money while fun entertainment on other nights will keep you laughing your entire meal. Here is a list of several restaurants in downtown Tulsa and special nights of the week to visit them on.
McNellies: Officially known as “James E. McNellie’s Public House,” this restaurant is located conveniently on 1st and Elgin Street. Every Wednesday night from 5-11pm McNellie’s offers a $3 hamburger deal; the wait to get seated at McNellies during this time period every Wednesday is testimony itself to the delicious hamburgers offered at this extremely affordable price. A side order of fries (either regular or their special sweet potato fries) is offered for a mere fifty cents, and toppings of cheese or bacon can be added to your patty for an additional fifty cents. While the other options on McNellie’s menu are also delicious, going on a Wednesday during this time slot will definitely save you cash while still providing you with a great meal and fun dining experience.
El Guapo Cantina: Also located on 1st Street in downtown Tulsa, this Mexican restaurant also offers a special low-price meal night. Fortunately for those who want to grab an affordable night out at McNellie’s, El Guapo’s “Taco Tuesday” deal is offered on Tuesdays-unlike McNellie’s Wednesday night specialty. For “Taco Tuesday” El Guapo offers one dollar tacos. While this may seem like a great deal, I have to admit that after trying this out I was rather disappointed. The tacos were very small and only the pork option was available for the dollar price; other meats cost a bit more. However, other customers seem to really enjoy this low priced deal and regularly drop by El Guapo on Tuesday nights.
Jo Mama’s Pizza: If you want delicious and decently priced pizza, Jo Mama’s is the place to go. With a fun and lively atmosphere, Jo Mama’s is especially entertaining on Thursday nights during their trivia time. Trivia nights vary in topic from week to week and teams from all over Tulsa love to compete for the top spot each week. Often the proceeds from trivia night are donated to a non-profit organization. If you plan on participating in trivia night (which starts at 9:00pm), then plan on getting to Jo Mama’s fairly early in order to ensure that you can get a table for you party since the restaurant tends to get very crowded very quickly. Jo Mama’s pizza and other appetizers are guaranteed to be delicious so you won’t go hungry while you rack your brain for the trivia answers.
