Are the words light ice cream placed together really true? Can you really get the same satisfaction from frozen yogurt as you can creamy rich ice cream? With a bit of searching you really can. My wife and I have been all over the country and have tasted a ton of ice cream (well, not literally 2,000 lbs, but maybe close). As she is watching her waist line we are on the search for a lower calorie but still great choice. Here are three great spots we have found in the eastern region of New York State.
Ice Cream Café – Carmel, New York: This family owned and operated ice cream café is located in the Shop Rite Center in Carmel New York just off Route 52. I went to college with the daughter of the Ice Cream Café owner and operator and can genuinely tell you the Spadaro family is serving up fun and flavor. Ice Cream Café not only serves up thirty different flavors of ice cream but they also offer frozen yogurt and Italian Ice. Growing up in Queens, NY I was a fan of the Lemon Ice King of Corona as a wee three year old and grabbing a cup of lemon ice from Ice Cream Café in Carmel, NY is a great way to cool off, stave off extra calories and have a fond memory of my childhood. Ice Cream Café in Carmel serves up great ice cream, light ice cream and frozen yogurt and is a great spot to hit on a Friday night when there is a classic car show in town.
Bellizzi – Mount Kisco, New York: When you are looking for a great low calorie ice cream treat take your spoon for a dip in some gelato. Bellizzi restaurant is family owned and operated and offers some amazing food and home made gelato. Bellizzi has such amazing flavors as mint chocolate chip, canola, lemonchello, cookies and cream and deep chocolate. As gelato is known to have far less calories than ice cream this home made delicious treat from Bellizzi is sure to make your taste buds and waist line happy. Bellizzi is a great family place to hit as the restaurant is set up with sections for the kids and the adults so everyone can have a great time and enjoy a lighter than ice cream dessert option.
Last Licks Ice Cream – Armonk, New York: Sports fans of all ages will love Last Licks Ice Cream in Armonk, New York. Last Licks Ice Cream originally started as a simple ice cream store but when Brandon Steiner got involved the game changed. At Last Licks Ice Cream you can get a Derek Jeter rookie card, attend a sports auction, watch a game and get a yogurt pie. Many places offer ice cream cakes but Last Licks is one of the only places that I know of where you can get a low fat yogurt dessert in the form of a pie. Bring your little athletes down to the ice cream shop that calls themselves a kids sports bar for some great yogurt after a great baseball game this summer.
