Lake Eufaula is a man made lake formed in 1963 as a result of the construction of the Walter F. George Dam. It is located on the Chatahoocee River right on the border between Georgia and Alabama. Because of this, fishing licenses from both states are acceptable for fishing on the lake. This lake is also called Walter F. George after the senator from Georgia. On the Alabama side, however, it is most commonly called Lake Eufaula because it is situated right next to the Alabama city of Eufaula. The lake attracts people for various activities including camping and water sports, but when most people hear Lake Eufaula, they think of fishing.
Lake Eufaula is 45,000 acres and has over 600 miles of shoreline. Most people who choose to come for vacation stay at the Lakepoint State Park Resort which has accommodations for travels in the form of hotel, cabin, and camping areas. A sign at the entrance of Eufaula the city names it as “The Bass Fishing Capital of the World” because Lake Eufaula is so well known for its bass fishing.
Lake Eufaula has a number of largemouth bass, spotted bass, and hybrid striped bass. Expert fisherman say that February and March are the best times of the year to catch large bass fish, and the oldest trick in the fishing book is to use a shiner lure to catch a smaller fish and then use this new fish to attract the big bass. Largemouth bass have to be at least 14 inches long to be harvested from Lake Eufaula, but spotted bass have no size restrictions. The lake also has a large crappie and catfish population. The crappie will be found in the woody, shallow areas. A well placed minnow will bring them out of their hiding spot. The catfish can be caught Because of fishing potential of the lake, it is a host to numerous fishing tournaments throughout the year.
