As a 90’s school kid, television shows were a big part of my life and the lives of my friends. It gave us a break from homework and something besides school and boys to talk about! Even now, ten years on, hearing familiar theme tunes from those days brings a smile to my face, so I would like to share eight of my favourite 90’s tv theme tunes with you.
TV show: Saved By The Bell
Theme Tune Title: Saved By The Bell
Performed by: Michael Damian
Every 90’s kid will be familiar with the theme tune to Saved By The Bell. This show was incredibly popular with teenagers when it aired between 1989 and 1993. Saved By The Bell was a comedy, centred around high school students at Bayside High. The main characters were played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Mario Lopez, Lark Voorhies, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, Elizabeth Berkley and Dustin Diamond.
This is one of the more iconic 90’s tv theme tunes for everyone who grew up with this show. It is probably one of the most recognised theme tunes ever and that is because the lyrics so well describe the school life of every teenager. To listen, click here: Saved by the Bell theme tune
TV show: Red Dwarf
Theme Tune Title: Red Dwarf Theme
Performed by: Howard Goodall and Jenna Russell
Red Dwarf is a British comedy classic! It began airing in 1988 but continued right through to 1999, and the 90’s was the show’s most popular decade. The show was set on a mining spaceship named Red Dwarf, and the pilot episode showed all but one of the crew being killed off by a radiation leak. The only survivor was technician Dave Lister who was in suspended animation at the time of the leak. The only other company he had on the spaceship was Holly (Red Dwarf’s computer), Arnold Rimmer (a hologram resurrected by Holly) and a man who evolved from Lister’s pet cat, Frankenstein. Other characters were later brought in but the main cast consisted of Chris Barrie, Craig Charles, Danny John Jules, Robert Llewellyn and Norman Lovett
Red Dwarf had two different theme tunes, one for the opening credits and one for the closing credits. The latter is the best of the two. There is something brilliantly catchy about this 90’s tv theme tune and as soon as you have heard it once, it stays with you all day. Red Dwarf theme tune
TV Show: Friends
Theme Tune Title: I’ll Be There For You
Performed by: The Rembrandts
Occasionally, a show comes along that captures the hearts of millions, and Friends is one of those shows. After the pilot episode in 1994, Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Joey and Phoebe quickly became household names. Often seen hanging out in Central Perk, fans became accustomed to hearing Chandler’s sarcasm, witnessing Phoebe’s weirdness and laughing at Joey’s silliness. Friends launched the careers of Jennifer Aniston, Matthew Perry, Courtney Cox, Matt Le Blanc, David Schwimmer and Lisa Kudrow.
Of all the 90’s tv theme tunes out there, I’ll Be There For You will probably be the most well remembered. Everything about this song captures what Friends was all about, knowing there is always someone there for you no matter what. Friends theme tune
TV Show: The Fresh Prince of Bel Air
Theme Tune Title: Fresh Prince of Bel Air Theme
Performed by: Will Smith
Who didn’t love this show? You know you are a child of the 90’s if you can perfectly sing this theme tune! The Fresh Prince of Bel Air was all about Will, a cool teenager was was sent to Bel Air to live with his rich uncle’s family. His laid back Philadelphia ways were often the cause of conflict between himself and Uncle Phil, but those conflicts never lasted long due to Will’s incredible charm and charisma. This show starred Will Smith, Alfonso Ribeiro, James Avery, Janet Hubert-Whitten, Daphne Maxwell Reid, Karyn Parsons and Tatyana Ali. It aired between 1990 and 1996.
This 90’s tv theme tune pretty much speaks for itself. It literally tells the story of how Will ended up in Bel Air, and with a great beat, it’s memorable too! Fresh Prince of Bel Air Theme Tune
TV Show: Baywatch
Theme Tune Title: I’m Always Here
Performed by: Jimi Jamison
Baywatch first came to our screens in 1989 and continued right up until 1999. The show was all about the Los Angeles County Lifeguards and is the most watched tv show in the world of all time! Baywatch had a huge cast in its ten years, the most famous being David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson, Carmen Electra, Yasmine Bleeth and Gina Lee Nolin.
This is another theme tune that captures what the show was all about. It was so popular that it was covered by a Swedish dance music group called Sunblock! Baywatch theme tune
TV Show: Dawson’s Creek
Theme Tune Title: I Don’t Want To Wait
Performed by: Paula Cole
In 1998, Dawson’s Creek first hit our screens and introduced us to the fictional village of Capeside. The main characters were Dawson Leery, Joey Potter, Pacey Witter and Jen Lindley but the storylines focused not just on them but their friends and families too. Everyone who grew up with these rather eloquent teenagers experienced every bit of pain and joy the characters went through as they progressed through high school to college, and to this day it is still one of my all time favourite shows. Dawson’s Creek starred James van der Beek, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson and Michelle Williams.
I Don’t Want To Wait is the perfect theme for a show about teenagers, because they never want to wait for anything! Dawson’s Creek theme tune
TV show: Blossom
Theme Tune Title: My Opinionation
Performed by: Dr.John
Another teen favourite, Blossom aired from 1990 to 1995. Blossom was all about a teenage girl, adjusting to life with her slightly overbearing father and her dumb jock brother after her mother left them. Blossom tackled many serious teenage issues, even though it was a comedy. Stars in Blossom included Mayim Bialik, Joey Lawrence, Ted Wass and Jenna von Oy.
While My Opinionation wasn’t entirely fitting to the show, it is still one of my favourite 90’s tv theme tunes of all time. Blossom theme tune
TV Show: Duck Tales
Theme Tune Title: Duck Tales Theme
Performed by: Unsure – but it was written by Mark Mueller
Duck Tales only just made it into the 90’s, it actually stopped airing in 1990, but the song is so good, it had to be included! Duck Tales was all about Donald Duck’s nephews, Huey, Duey and Looey who were sent to live with their Great Uncle Scrooge, the richest duck in the world!
Not only is this one of the best 90’s tv theme tunes, it may just be the best theme tune ever! I challenge you not to sing along! Woo-ooo! Duck Tales theme tune
