Frustration has been a constant companion to me for as long as I can remember. Mainly because I chose it. I put myself in situations where I demanded control even when I knew that control was not possible. My good friend Vanessa says, control is an illusion.
I tried to change others to suit my needs and I tried to do God’s job for him. There were things I wanted, things I thought I needed and I tried to force those things into being. Instead of trying so hard to do it myself, I am releasing these things and allowing God to fill my needs.
Goals and plans aren’t bad things, but they shouldn’t be cast in stone in your mind. Too many blessings come to us in forms that we can’t even fathom. Developments down the road that we never imagined can totally change our situation. We can’t possible know what to exactly ask for because we don’t know all these variables.
So, humbly I am giving up in the right way. I am saying my prayers and asking for better things to come into my life. I am leaving it up to God to fill in the details. I am able now to say that I have no control over anyone else. It is not my job to “fix” them. I can only do my part, which is to admit I don’t know everything. I can’t make everything happen by myself. I don’t know all God’s plans and intentions.
I am opening up my life to flow where he sees fit. I am allowing him to work and I am going to sit back and enjoy the ride.
There is a certain peace that comes from giving up the responsibility of making sure everyone else is doing what they should be doing. Whether you are trying to control a spouse, another relative or a friend; you will make yourself crazy if you keep trying to direct their life.
You have to choose your own path and work on yourself and allow God to work in your life. You will have much more peace when you only look as far as yourself when making changes in your life. Others may decide to walk beside you or they may decide that they would rather be left behind.
I am not saying I am going to completely abandon helping someone, but I am taking a different tack. I have been trying to impose my will on someone who doesn’t want to change, or doesn’t want to change enough to put forth any effort. Someone saying they want help and then refusing to do the work is no longer going to be on me. Only God can change them.
My job now is to accept others, encourage them, be kind to them, forgive them, pray for them and let them find their own way.
“Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.” Mark 9:35
“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” Ephesians 4:2
