With the right products this summer, there’s no reason to have that sticky, melty makeup feeling that’s so common in the heat and humidity of the season. Trade in your emollient, full coverage products for some lighter fare this season and stay fresh-looking even at the beach.
The following is a list of some of my favorite products to try to beat the heat and keep your skin healthy, beautiful, and picture perfect.
The first thing you need is a long-lasting, lightweight foundation with an SPF for some extra sun protection. Starting off with a solid, but nearly sheer liquid is the best way to prep the skin for color. Clinique’s Almost Makeup SPF 15 isn’t greasy or heavy on the skin. It’s oil-free and leaves the pores free and clear of residue, since it’s non-comedogenic. Since it’s waterproof too, this formula is great for outdoor wear all summer long.
To follow up the liquid base, try an oil-free, sheer powder to set your makeup while absorbing excess oil. Heavy powders can leave the skin looking chalky, so it’s important to find one that works with your skin and goes on smoothly. Stay-Matte Sheer Pressed Powder (also from Clinique) is a great choice because it controls shine without leaving residue on your skin. For more coverage, simply layer the powder. Otherwise, one quick application will last throughout the day for oil and shine absorption.
With skin cancer on the rise and UV rays more prominent than ever, tanning just isn’t safe anymore. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get that “sun-kissed” look all summer long. Load up on the SPF and choose a powder bronzer to highlight the high points of the face. Use a brush to dust bronzer on any part of the face that would get rosy from being outside all day–like the cheek bones, forehead, chin, and nose. Go easy on the bronzer, though, and be sure to blend thoroughly. You shouldn’t be able to see lines between the bronzed skin and un-bronzed skin. Also remember that a good bronzer should be a natural brown color, not orange. And Try Nature’s Minerals Bronzing Powder from The Body Shop for a nice, natural look.
When you’re prepping the skin for summer-time sun, it’s easy to forget the lips. But protection now might be prevention from future lines and wrinkles, so choose a light lip tint with an SPF for outdoor adventures. I like Origins Rain and Shine Liptint, which has an SPF 10 to keep lips protected from UVA and UVB rays. With shea butter and grape seed oil, this lip tint moisturizes in the driest, hottest weather. Add vitamins C and E for antioxidant protection and this is a perfect, lightweight lip color. Plus, it’s available in 16 fun shades, so there’s a color for everyone!
Keep Oil & Sweat at Bay
To keep all that makeup on all day, start by prepping with a good, oil-free moisturizer and then carry blotting tissues in your beach bag. A moisturizer that is water-based will stop skin’s oil production and add balance to the skin, so your makeup is less likely to melt off. Try Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief from Clinique, a thin, gel-like lotion to quench your skin’s summer thirst. It’s lightweight, can go on even after you’ve applied your makeup, and keeps your skin feeling fresh instead of sticky.
As for those blotting tissues, tuck a pack of antibacterial Tea Tree Blotting Tissues from the Body Shop into your bag before hitting the beach. Each tiny, easy-to-carry package contains 65 oil blotting tissues that quickly absorb oil from your skin without disturbing your makeup. Since they’re also antibacterial, they’ll help to fight current and future pimples too.
Keeping these products handy this summer will go a long way for your skin’s health and beauty. Remember to always wear sunscreen before heading outside and be sure to wash off any makeup before bed to cut down on oil production and blemishes.
