Did Barack Obama have an affair with Vera Baker? The National Enquirer certainly seems to believe so, as the magazine has finally published the story its been working on since 2008. So does the National Enquirer have definitive proof that Barack Obama was cheating on wife Michelle with Vera Baker, or is the magazine using its newfound clout to make this salacious story seem true?
Who is Vera Baker?
Vera Baker is a figure that those on the web trying to get Barack Obama out of office know all too well (see “birthers”). Stories about an alleged affair between Barack Obama and Vera Baker have been circulating since 2008, when a rumor that Barack Obama had an affair with an anonymous young staffer hit the web. Vera Baker was reportedly the National Finance Director for Obama’s 2004 senate campaign, but has long since left the U.S. and now has a job somewhere in the West Indies (or, if you believe another version of the story, Michelle Obama managed to have her shipped off after she became jealous of Barack Obama’s “close friendship” with the attractive 33-year-old, who is admittedly leagues more tempting than Monica Lewinsky). Vera Baker contends that she left at the end of Barack Obama’s campaign and that Michelle Obama had nothing to do with her relocation. Rather, she contends that she fell in love with a man and followed him to the Caribbean. So was the 2008 story a smear campaign to try and prevent Barack Obama from becoming President, or did he have an affair with Vera Baker? After a couple of years of searching for answers, the National Enquirer seems to believe that it has found the truth.
What proof does the National Enquirer have that Barack Obama had an affair with Vera Baker?
According to the National Enquirer, Barack Obama and Vera Baker met up at a Washington DC hotel in 2004, and they’ve obtained a statement confirming this from the limo driver that allegedly took Vera Baker to the secret rendezvous at the Hotel George. The driver alleges that he took the two to various locations where Barack Obama campaigned for funds to aid him in his run for the presidency before dropping them back off at the hotel together. According to the National Enquirer, investigators say that the driver’s story checks out, and the magazine is attempting to get surveillance footage of Barack Obama and Vera Baker entering the hotel together. If the magazine does find such surveillance footage, it would surely spell the end of his presidency and possibly his marriage.
But does the National Enquirer have enough proof to blow this story wide open?
Before we blow off the story of the Barack Obama and Vera Baker as just another of the National Enquirer’s many outrageous stories that are too ridiculous to be true, keep in mind that this is the magazine that forced John Edwards to admit he was having an affair with Rielle Hunter, whom he now has a child with. I’m sure many Dems breathed a sigh of relief that he didn’t end up being their guy after that cheating scandal broke, but it now looks like Barack Obama has found himself in the same hot seat. And if breaking one cheating scandal isn’t enough to convince the American public that the National Enquirer is at least somewhat credible, keep in mind that the magazine is also responsible for introducing us to Rachel Uchitel and the slew of Tiger Woods’ mistresses that would come forward after her reveal.
But should we take the National Enquirer cheating scandal seriously this time?
While it is entirely possible that Barack Obama and Vera Baker did have an affair and all the National Enquirer’s sources may check out, keep in mind that the magazine is in the business of making money, and it could be using its newfound credibility to try and convince its readers that this latest scandal is also the real deal. However, if the magazine is indeed trying to obtain surveillance video from the hotel and succeeds, well, I guess there’s a good chance that we might just see Sarah Palin as president in 2012.
