Our family has lived in Alaska for more than 30 years, and during that time there is one thing we can count on with almost 100% certainty, and that is that sometime during our long cold winters we will get a wind storm that will mean the loss of electricity.
Because of this, we are well prepared. We have a generator, alternative heat sources, and a plethora of candles and oil lamps on hand. Over the years I have purchased some very functional oil lamps, and occasionally I spend more for one that is a bit more attractive (the one I like has copper accents). However, I recently came across a manufacturer of oil lamps that has a collection that is genuinely beautiful and elegant!
Aura Oil & Lamp Creations make several oil lamps that under their line of products called “Glass Dimensions Oil Candles”. These come in a variety of shapes and sizes, the one I like is the smaller 8 1/2″ New England Oil Lamp, mainly because it fits into our storage cabinet where we keep all of our emergency supplies. It is also available in the 10 1/2″ and 12″ varieties.
The 8 1/2″ New England Oil Candle is hand made, and the base consists of hand blown glass. The base looks like an inverted cereal bowl, and the main part of the base looks like the shape of a globe. The upper portion is a small cup with indented slots on which the base of the shade rests.
In keeping with the crystal clear look, the shade is made of hand cut clear glass, and is as elegant as any glass shade I have ever seen. To be clear, this is a simple square cut glass shade, but it is indeed elegant! The base holds a generous 11 ounces of oil, enough to keep the lamp burning for an amazing 66 hours. The unit comes with the wick and all you need to add is the oil.
Although this New England Oil Lamp is made of clear glass, you can easily change the look of the lamp by adding colored oil to the base. You could add green oil for Christmas, red oil for Valentines Day, or blue oil for an every day look. The possibilities are endless! Aura Oil & Lamp Creations sells oil along with the lamps, and their oil is worth checking out because they have a wider variety of colors than I have seen in any store. Color choices include: clear, black, black cherry, red, orange, gold, yellow, apricot, several shades of green, aqua, teal, several shades of blue, periwinkle, purple and cranberry. Wow. How about those colors?
Does this New England Oil Lamp cost more than your run of the mill variety? You bet. It retails for around $85.00, but if you are looking for a lamp that will make a statement, this one is it! We have been in the middle of entertaining guests when the power has gone out, and how I wish I would have had an upscale, elegant looking oil lamp such as this one in these cases. This product is probably for the person who has “everything”, but what an amazing gift it would make. This lamp would be a very nice wedding gift as well. This is the prettiest and most attractive oil lamp that I have ever seen.
