It is important to indulge yourself on occasion to reach your weight loss goals. But did you know that how you feel afterward determines if you will succeed in losing weight? Your attitude on indulging can be a weight loss barrier if you let it.
There are positive and negative ways to indulge when you are trying to lose weight, as there are positive and negative attitudes that go with it.
Positive Attitude on Indulging Is Not a Barrier to Weight Loss. Those with a positive attitude on giving in to cravings know the following:
Moderation. This can be a small amount of chocolate or a reduced portion of a favorite dessert. The point is to count this into total daily amounts regardless if you’re counting calories, fat or something else. I have found I only need to indulge in small amounts one or two times a week to keep a positive outlook on my weight loss.
Necessity. A small indulgence is necessary off and on to prevent a potential binge later on. The important thing is to make small lifestyle changes, not to deny yourself completely. If I feel too restricted in my diet, I am less likely to succeed or continue.
Attitude. When you accidentally overdo on a craving, if you have a positive attitude you will look at this as a minor setback and use it as a learning tool of what not to do in the future. If it is a food you know you will not be able to control yourself in portion, you will avoid that food until you can.
Negative Attitude on Indulging Is a Weight Loss Barrier. Those who have negative attitudes on cravings may do the following:
Self Denial. A negative attitude on dieting in general includes self-denial of indulgences. Strictly adhering to a diet plan can cause boredom, frustration and a feeling of missing out. All of these can lead to giving up on weight loss goals.
Binging. The self-denial mentioned above can lead to binging. When you lose self control and overdo cravings, this can lead to a feeling of guilt that can lead to more self-denial and more binging in a vicious cycle so it can be hard to regain control.
Attitude. With a negative attitude, you will look at setbacks as failures. You will be less inclined to maintain your weight loss goals because they will seem unreachable if you feel you keep messing up. Everyone makes mistakes, even in dieting.
Don’t Let Attitude on Indulging Become A Weight Loss Barrier. It is important to indulge your cravings on occasion but in moderation. Don’t let your diet become so rigid that it controls you. You control your diet. Avoid one weight loss barrier by gaining a more positive attitude on indulging your cravings to attain your weight loss goals.
