The decision to attend college or return to college is a tough decision for many individuals. The cost, time and logistics present numerous problems. Online coursework and degrees have made it possible for many individuals to attain a college degree without the expense or time of attending a traditional college. Individuals interested in technology will benefit from greatly from attaining a degree in Technology Management.
My first impression of a Technology Management degree was not favorable. To me it was a glorified business management degree program that focused on technology. I felt a degree in business management would benefit my son better and provide him with the tools needed for a successful career. I was wrong.
My son is a technology guru who is constantly seeking knowledge in the technology area. He attended an online college and received a degree in Technology Management. His degree afforded him the opportunity to land a high paying position with a technology firm.
Throughout his educational experience he was learning skills in planning, organization, leading and controlling an organizational setting. His leadership skills helped him to gain self-confidence and the ability to interact within the dynamics of a group or team.
A large part of the education was on technology and how to use it for problem solving and decision making. He learned the laws and legal ramifications involved with an organization. A good portion of his education dealt with financial analysis and the ability to input data correctly and understand statistical financial data. All in all, the courses involved in a Technology Management degree are sound and well thought through.
General education courses were part of the degree. Courses like English, math, history, humanities, social sciences and electives rounded out his learning experience. His online course had the general education courses peppered throughout his four year degree.
A big key to my son’s success was his determination and ability to maintain a technology position while attending college. Employers look for individuals with practical experience and working in the trenches prior to advancing them into a managerial position. The technology field is no different. Employers find an individual who understands what it is like to work as a technician makes a better leader. This is true for all fields of management.
Several online colleges offer a degree in Technology Management. The program is designed as a four-year program. My son was able to attain his degree in three years. He did this by working diligently on the coursework and maintained the momentum throughout the year. He did not take summers or holidays off from his studies.
Take the initiative and check into an online Technology Management degree if you enjoy technology and have the desire to work in a leadership position. Focus your daily activities on perfecting both your technological and leadership qualities.
