Connecticut has some fantastic museums and historical sites that you might not know about. Our state’s art museums are phenomenal and are a great place to spend a day. Here are art museums that I recommend making time to explore.
New Britain Museum of American Art offers visitors a look at three hundred years worth of American art in the form of over ten thousand choice pieces of art. The collection includes paintings, drawings, graphics, sculptures, photographs, and illustrations. There is a variety of tours for visitors, though I do suggest calling ahead to be certain of availability. There is an additional fee for led tours. . Admission is $9.00 for adults, $8.00 for seniors, $7.00 for students and children under twelve enter free. The museum is closed on Mondays.
Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford has more than fifty thousand works of art, from a span of over five thousand years, on display. Especially note worthy works in the collection include those by Warhol, Picasso, Klimt, Monet, Dalí, Van Gogh, Warhol, and Matisse. Tours are available to visitors during museum hours, with group tours available through prior arrangements. Admission is $10.00 for adults, $8.00 for seniors and $5.00 for students. Children twelve and under enter free. Prices may vary during special events and fundraisers. The museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
In New Haven, you can visit two great art museums in one day. The Yale University Art Gallery holds a collection of art from ancient, medieval, and Renaissance eras. There is also art from the near and far East, African art, works of European and American masters, and a collection of modern art. The Yale Center for British Art is right across the street. This museum holds the largest collection of British art including paintings, sculptures, print, drawings and illustrated books anywhere outside Europe. Both museums are free and open to the public.
The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield specializes in presenting art from new and mid career artists. The facility is a non-collecting museum, which means that the exhibitions evolve and change. The museum offers workshops and educational programs for children and adults. The museum offers tours on Sunday and Tuesday and can arrange for group visits with advance notice. Admission is $7.00 for adults, $4.00 for seniors and college students. Children 18 and under free, with free admission for everyone on Tuesdays. The museum is closed on Mondays.
Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme is a grand showcase of American Impressionism. The riverside museum offers the art along with the history and nature of the area in one beautiful location. You can view the history rich house, Krieble Gallery for the art exhibits, the Hartman Education Cent for workshops, the natural beauty of the gardens, and the William Chadwick Studio to see how the artist worked. Admission is $9.00 for adults, $8.00 for seniors, $7.00 for students, and free to children twelve and under. The museum is closed on Mondays. Group tours with additional options, such as time to paint in the garden, are available with reservations.
