“Seems like everyone’s an actor or an actor’s best friend, I wonder what was wrong to begin with that they should all have to pretend.”
One of my favorite television programs in syndication is the Pretender. The series is character driven. The lead character’s name is Jarrod, played by Michael T. Weiss.
Jarrod is one of immense skills. He is a pretender. He can become a doctor, lawyer, race car driver, sky diver, pilot, mountain rescuer any time he wants. He is not faking these things. He is a pretender with skills and a mind that can master anything.
The setting for the series is established with Jarrod being kidnapped from his parents when he was a small child. He was kidnapped by a clandestine covert operations group called “the Center” because he has an off the scale IQ. He is the ultimate problem solver in his ability to pretend to be others. He is a man without an identity of his own.
His life’s passion has been to discover who he really is and find his family. All his life he has been used to work out the details of government assassinations, coups, and cover ups.
The premise for the series was Jarrod’s escape in the very first episode. He became a fugitive to find his own identity and his family. He has witnessed his brother die and his parents continually on the run. All are in constant danger of being discovered by the Center’s hit squads and sweeper teams.
In pursuit of his identity, Jarrod meets many who his heart compels him to help. He helps people in need. If someone has been wrongfully accused or injured, Jarrod will assume a role that will bring the truth to light. In this way he is very much like the legendary Zorro and Robin Hood. He foils the plans of the wicked, takes from the corrupt rich and powerful and rights the wrongs they have done to help people in need.
On one occasion, while pretending to be a doctor, he is seeing an elderly woman who is hospitalized with a blocked bowel. She is facing surgery. When she asks Jarod if he is a doctor, he responds, “I am today.” Interesting note, from his own research, he develops an herbal remedy that alleviates her need for surgery.
It dawned on me recently how what Jarrod does is not so very different from what many of us do. We can be found pretending to be something we are not and hoping no one finds us out. We can be observed spending more money than we really have, dressing, driving and living better than we can afford. Putting up a phony front is pretending to be something or someone that one is not.
Or how about those times we pretended to be something we were not to get the attention of someone we wanted to get to know, or we wanted to like us. Sound like pretenders to you? Sure, you are right. Frauds, fakes, pretenders, all are actually liars.
The problem with all of these, like with any other form of a lie, is that they must be kept up indefinitely. One must be preoccupied with remembering the sequence of lies told to date. Then comes the bondage and most can’t keep up the pretense very long.
Are you ready to evolve to become our authentic self? Then decide you do not love yourself so little or anybody so much that you have to perpetrate a fraud, be somebody you are not, be a pretender, be a fake, or live a lie. It just isn’t worth it. It is too much work when being honest with self and others is so much easier.
When we become something we are not to get other people to like us, they don’t really like us, the real us anyway. They do not know us. They have not met the real us. They are influenced to like our lie, our unreal self.
Don’t you think it is time you came out of the closet and started representing your real self? My friend, Dr. Keith Troy often quotes his grand mother who never got past third grade from her wealth of sage wisdom that said, “Baby, you got to be who you is.”
It is up to you. It is up to us. We can live in bondage by pretending to be something we are not or, we can liberate our real selves to become all we have been purposed by the Creator to become. I tell you, living out in the open being honest first to yourself and then to others makes life a lot easier. You never have to pay attention to remember your last lie. Your life will have become freer because you no longer love yourself so little or anyone else so much not to be your real self.
Be Yourself. Be who you have been designed by the Creator to be. If you are not careful you just may learn that you like the real you better than any of the phonies you have been fronting for so long. What are you waiting for? Free yourself to be who you are.
