Retired military personnel enjoy many perks such as tax-free shopping privileges, certain free legal services such as the services of a notary public, and other privileges on the base or post. But are military retirees entitled to free glasses?
Standard Issue Glasses
According to TRICARE, military retirees who are eligible for other medical services through TRICARE are entitled to receive Standard Issue glasses each year. These include one clear pair of Bifocals/Trifocals (Multi-focals) and one tinted pair of Bifocals/Trifocals if they are prescribed by the retiree’s Optometrist or Ophthalmologist. Retirees who choose Bifocals or Trifocals receive one pair of Distance Vision and one pair of Near Vision glasses. They are also entitled to receive one pair of tinted Distance Vision glasses, provided they are prescribed by the Optometrist or Ophthalmologist.
TRICARE goes on to state that retirees who live less than 50 miles from a military health clinic that has optometry services need to take along their prescription so that they can be properly measured for a comfortable fit. The clinic will then order the glasses from the most appropriate facility. However, if you live more than 50 miles away from a military health clinic with optometry services, you will need to order from the NOSTRA Web site, using form DD771.
