Plastic plant and flower pots are a dime a dozen and not so impressive. If that’s all you have, though, it’s all you have. Although they’ve now made strides to give some cheap, plastic pots a nicer appearance you’ll have to look at non-plastic pots to really be able to have decorative containers for your plants and flowers. At least, that’s the way it used to be. Nice plant pots can cost a lot of money, but if you have a roll of tin foil around the house, you’ve got what you need to make antique-look plant and flower pots for the inside of your house. The pots are actually very impressive, and by just looking at the finished pots, no one will ever be able to tell they’re made from ordinary foil.
Decide on the size you want for the new plant pot. You can make them huge or tiny as long as you have a mold. Don’t run out and buy foil molds; just use a bowl as the mold. Turn the bowl upside-down and tear off pieces of foil to cover the bowl. If the bowl is small enough so that it can be covered with one piece of foil you can proceed. Tear three or four pieces of quality foil to make the bowl. Add another piece or two if you’re using really thin foil. You can add nearly as many pieces as you want to make a more substantial bowl, but for now, practice by using three to five pieces. Stack the on top of each other then lay them over the upside-down bowl so that the shiny side is facing outward.
Begin molding the foil to the shape of the bowl you’re using. Don’t worry about the foil creasing as you’re molding it. Turn it over and start molding the foil around the edge of the bowl. Don’t bend the foil over the top of the bowl or you can’t get the bowl back out. Instead, fold the edges of the foil over, as you get near the edges of the bowl. After you’ve created the basic shape you can remove the bowl that you’re using as the mold. Work with the top edges of the foil, flattening them, folding them, fluting the edges or even rolling them. Continue working with the foil until the edge is smooth and equal, all the way around.
Now you’ll go through the process that gives the finished planter an antique look. Apply black paint to the foil, doing the entire inside first. Don’t worry if the paint doesn’t get under creases in the foil. Apply a nice layer to the foil but fret not if every square inch of the foil is not black. After covering the inside of the planter with the paint take paper towels or a soft rag and wipe it out. Don’t spend a lot of time trying to scrub out all the black paint; just wipe the bowl somewhat so that it is partially black and partially silver. This will give the appearance of tarnished metal. After the inside of the bowl is finished do the same to the outside. Paint it, wipe it off, and then you’re finished.
The planter can be used as-is or you can continue with the project to create a more embellished design. You’ll find that various types of glue, though, don’t work well with foil. Purchase adhesives made especially for foil and other metals or use alternative methods to glue on the chosen accents. Glue dots, glue strips and even double-sided tape work well to secure various decorations to the finished planter.
Glue roping around the top edge of the planter to create one look. Make something different by attaching a metal letter to the front of the pot. You’ll find lots and lots of different things you can use to embellish the pot at a craft store or even a home improvement retailer. Some choices for embellishing include appliques, decorative stones, fake jewels, wrought iron, wooden shapes, metallic tape and even hardware pieces.
If you start with a bowl that’s very large you will have to use a slightly different technique to create the foil planter. Tear off three pieces of foil, stack them, then lay them across the bowl. Tear off three more, stack them, then lay them so that they cris-cross each other in the center. Continue doing this until the entire bowl is covered with foil. Now mold the foil to the bowl and roll or fold the top edges.
Set plants which are already in plastic pots inside the new foil pots. Make large ones or really small ones by using the same technique. The planters are appropriate for most any room of the house and work for holding green plants, real flowers or even silk flowers. You’ll love the new plant pots that will really impress your visitors and add a touch of elegance to any decor.
