Angelina Jolie has been cast as Marilyn Monroe, according to The Daily Mail. So will she be starring in a serious biopic about the starlet’s life? Nope, she’s starring in the movie adaptation of Andrew O’Hagan’s novel, ‘The Life And Opinions Of Maf The Dog, And Of His Friend Marilyn Monroe’, where George Clooney will be joining her to play Marilyn Monroe’s good ol’ pal Frank Sinatra. So what does a dog named Maf have to do with Marilyn Monroe? Well, the little guy with a tail is the one telling the tale in the book and movie adaption, so I’d say he’s got quite a big part to play.
But before I get all into why a movie is being made about Marilyn Monroe through the viewpoint of a dog, I’ve got some devastating news: Christina Hendricks was one of the actresses in line to play Marilyn Monre, but got passed over in favor of angular Angelina Jolie (hopefully she starts chowing down on some cheeseburgers and shakes to achieve Marilyn Monroe’s iconic “Jell-O on stilts” shake). Why, oh why did we not get to see Christina Hendricks as Marilyn Monroe? (Well, there are two big reasons why, but I won’t go there.) Scarlett Johansson was also passed over for the role (meh), and somewhere Lindsay Lohan and Megan Fox’s Marilyn tattoo are shedding vodka tears (oh well, Lindsay Lohan can always do a Funny or Die video with Samantha Ronson as Frank Sinatra and Snooki as Maf the Maltese).
Anyway, the crazy book is told through the eyes of an extremely well-read pup named Maf (short for “Mafia”), given to Marilyn Monroe by Frank Sinatra after being passed around from celebrity to celebrity. The pampered pooch then tries to give us a pup’s perspective into the life of a beautiful being that we humans just can’t seen to fully understand, with flies, butterflies, rats, and cats all chiming in at times.
In short, the screen adaptation of ‘The Life And Opinions Of Maf The Dog, And Of His Friend Marilyn Monroe’ is going to be an irresistable curiosity, but I’m not so so sure that Angelina Jolie, a sultry seductress with sharp angles and a deep voice drenched with the dark side of sex appeal, will be able to carry Marilyn Monroe’s sweeter notes and capture her breathless vulnerability. But if she does fail to pull off something seemingly impossible, perhaps narrator Maf the dog will steal the show in ‘The Life And Opinions Of Maf The Dog, And Of His Friend Marilyn Monroe’.
