Reiki is a Japanese form of alternative medicine that began to be used in the 20th century. It is based on the idea that an energy universally flows and helps the body in its attempt to heal itself. It was previously regarded as a self-care type of medicine that was performed at one’s home, but it is now widely used in different clinics worldwide.
For those of you who do not know anything about reiki, here is a brief explanation of how it is performed. The patient will sit down or lay down on a comfortable table (fully clothed). The person performing the session will then place his/her hands, palms down, over the patients head using a specific technique for 2-5 minutes (until the practitioner feels that the energy in that location has been used). After that hand technique is used, the practitioner will use a different hand technique, usually in a different location, and this process will continue until the reiki practitioner has used 10-15 different hand techniques. The entire procedure can last from 2 to 6 hours.
Reiki is used for stress, anxiety, AIDS, severe pain, and can be used solely for relaxation purposes. Although over 1 million adults use it yearly, it is not clearly known why it works. Currently, scientists are working towards finding answers about the medicine. Common reported effects of reiki include sleepiness, relaxed muscles, warmness flowing throughout the body, and the most common effect is a refreshed feeling after the use of reiki.
As the use of reiki becomes more popular worldwide, more people are beginning to perform reiki as a job. There is no needed special background in order to receive training, but reiki must be taught to a person by an experienced master of the medicine. There are many different techniques of reiki and an individual who is exploring the occupational side of the medicine may choose to use whichever technique best suits the person. Although training is sometimes required, no licensing is required to perform reiki.
Since no licensing is required to perform reiki, it is best to get feedback and find out about the different reiki practitioners around. To ensure that you’re getting the best treatment available you should check into the reiki practitioners background and make sure that other patients have been satisfied with his/her work. You also need to keep in mind that reiki is being studied more currently than it ever has been before, and many things are still unknown about the practice.
