Part II of the Genetic testing for pregnancy, paternity, legal, and ethical issues series
DNA testing is not cheep for Americans. It is not covered by medicaid nor most insurances as it is not considered a medical necessity. However a home testing kit which requires just a saliva sample and a cheek swap could prove to be economically feasible for so many disadvantaged women and or couples.
DNA testing and surrogacy and adoption
In terms of surrogacy the family who cannot conceive will often require a pregnancy test to determine legitimacy of the pregnancy. Home pregnancy tests are easy and affordable. The better quality home pregnancy tests can indicate a pregnancy the day after sexual intercourse. If the woman tests positive she will need to be seen by a doctor.
On the other hand, if the pregnancy test is negative; yet, she is experiencing some symptoms of pregnancy again, she must see a doctor to determine if the pregnancy test was erroneous or she has some other undiagnosed medical condition.
Often time especially in the case of surrogacy the legal non biological parents to be will require a professional pregnancy test done at a hospital or DNA test center.
Familial reasons for DNA/genetic testing
DNA testing can be done on twins, to determine if they are identical or fraternal twins. Even though twins can look identical, they may in fact be fraternal. For example, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen are fraternal twins; yet, many would look upon these two young ladies and assume that the are identical twins.
Blood brother relationships
Occasionally testing may be necessary to determine if siblings are full biological brothers and sisters having the same two parents ;or, if they are half brothers or sisters. For certain couples going through a divorce or separation, this might in fact become a custody issue.
More advanced DNA testing
Even familiar testing can be done for determining aunts, uncles, and grandparents in custody cases concerning custody rights or even inheritance.
