Although I own several yard rakes, I had never seen a shrub rake until my neighbor was using one to remove the dead leaves from her raised floweer beds. She made quick work of this chore, and was nice enough to let me borrow her shrub rake.
My local Ace Hardware store sells the Ames Greensweeper Shrub Rake for around $12.00, and it seemed like a very little investment for a yard tool that helped me do these unwanted chores. It was money well spent.
The Ames Greensweeper Shrub Rake looks like your typical rake, it has a handle and a fan of tines, but the rake is smaller so it’s easier to use in tight spaces. It does have wooden handle that mreasures 42 inches long, which is about the same length as my full sized rakes. Where the Ames Greensweeper Shrub Rake is different, however, is in the size of the head.
At the widest part of the fan, this rake measures only 8 inches, where as some of my other rakes have a sweep of as much as 18 inches. You can imagine how much easier it would be to rake small areas with this shrub rake!
Construction wise, this Ames Greensweeper Shrub Rake seems to be well made. While the tines and head are made of a “premium” polypropylene plastic, the handle is wooden and actually screws into the rake to secure it. I have had the heads of rakes come off on my during use, and this can be very frustrating indeed. Ames is so confident in the workmanship of this rake that they put a ten year warranty on it.
The Ames Greensweeper Shrub Rake comes in handy all over our large yard. We have a lot of bushes, including raspberry bushes. If you have ever worked around these, you know they are very prickly and hard to work near. The small head of this rake slips in between the bushes and allows me to clean away leaves and dead raspberry canes with ease.
We also have a fence around our home, and the Ames Greensweeper Shrub Rake helps me to clean way from the fence after I have cut the grass. It also fits nicely into my raised flower beds that are about 15 feet long. Until now, I have never had a rake that could fit into these raised beds.
Because of the wooden handle, it’s a good idea to wear garden gloves when raking, but I make it a rule to use them anyway, even with plastic handled tools, because they prevent me from getting any splinters or blisters on my hands.
I have found this rake to be extremely helpful around the yard, and would recommend it to anyone who does yard work or owns their own home. It’s a small investment and I don’t think you will regret such a purchase.
