The very first results show of Season 5 began for America’s Got Talent and all was well until the last 15 seconds. The two remaining acts were waiting for Howie’s verdict. It came just before Law & Order: SVU started. However, those with TiVo’s did not see Howie Mandel’s announcement. Many were wondering which act was going on to the semi-finals? Perhaps the show’s producers will have better time management skills, along with no more technical difficulties, for next week’s show. As you can tell the results show was “live”. I actually enjoyed Wednesday night’s show, because it reminded me a little of Dancing with the Star’s brilliant results show versus the other dreadful ones. It was well-paced, entertaining and suspenseful. Now let’s get on with this show.
Act I:
Thankfully we got to find out almost immediately who the first act would be to go on to the semi finals in a few weeks. Nick showed us all of the acts waiting patiently in the green room, much like a holding room or break room for guest stars, speakers, etc. before appearing on stage. They all looked relaxed sitting either on couches or barstool-like chairs with tables. Nick Cannon called out the first three acts: Sally Cohn, Airpocalypse and Nathaniel Kenyon. I just knew who was going through. Naturally I was right. It was Nathaniel, the heartthrob singer, who sailed on to the semi-finals. I was sad for Sally, the hand whistler. If memory serves me the show has had a wildcard round. Hopefully they will have it this season. Maybe Sally or some others will be picked then.
Selena Gomez’s “breath of fresh air” performance:
I’ve certainly heard of this singer who was one of the stars of the Disney Channel. She is also named after the famous Tejano singer and Pop sensation, Selena. Selena Gomez performed with her band from their latest single release. It was obvious she has quite the fan base supporting her in the audience on America’s Got Talent. Selena wore a beautiful red dress that was tastefully reminiscent of the cute 50’s style with a pleaded poodle-like skirt. What struck me about Selena was how youthful, innocent and refreshing she looked compared to those tramp-looking, pop tart teen pop singers like Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, and the ilk. I was surprised to see Selena be so opposite. However, her stage presence isn’t exactly polished yet, but she was a welcoming change of pace from other teen singers who are too mechanical onstage.
Acts II & III:
More results followed with the announcements of other acts moving on to the next round. Nick called on Nick Pike, Kung Fu Heroes and Fighting Gravity on to the stage. This was such a no-brainer who was going through and it wasn’t the fire juggler/tumbler/ whatever or the martial artists. Naturally the college boys from Virginia Tech who are fraternity brothers moved on to the semi-finals. In an odd twist of events Nick Cannon called on Nick Pike to say a few words. Pike wanted to apology for his heady behavior. Earlier we saw his hot-headed response to what the judges said to him Tuesday night. A lot of his words were bleeped out. Nick Pike wanted to hug Piers who flatly refused the gesture. In an awkward moment Nick Pike went around to the judges table to try to hug them. It didn’t seem to work. Afterwards, Nick Cannon called on three more acts: Christina & Ali, Hot Shot Tap Dancers and Maricar. It was possible either the sister singing duo or the sibling tap dancing act would go through. Too bad it could not be both. In the end it was the singing act onward to the semis. However, Piers Morgan gave the two girls strict advice on working more with their vocal abilities, because the competition would get tougher with the other singers.
Rock of Ages Broadway cast & The Final Act:
Here was the final performance of the night from guest stars of the Tony nominated musical Rock of Ages. This is a musical based on the 80’s hair bands like Twisted Sister, Styx, Poison, and many others from that era. Dee Snider of Twisted Sister made a cameo appearance in the first number. Constantine Maroulis is the show’s star. Afterwards, Nick Cannon mentioned he had been on another talent competition show, which was American Idol. Constantine was on the same season as Carrie Underwood. He gave advice for the America’s Got Talent contestants to have fun and enjoy their experience on the show. Finally, it was down to the last three acts: Paul Safy, Jr., RNG and Future Funk. I’ll cut to the chase, because Howie Mandel sure couldn’t, Future Funk ended up being the judge’s pick to move forward in the competition. Next week will be more of the same, but with another set of different acts.
