The top five American Idol contestants crooned to old favorite classics of “Ole Blue Eyes” Frank Sinatra tonight. Prepped and primed, and backed by Harry Connick Jr. and his band, which contestant(s) did Sinatra proud? The pressure is on, the end is near and Sinatra’s daughters Tina and Nancy were in the audience. Could it be any more stressful for the contestants? Probably not, so let’s get down to it and see which one stood out most during tonight’s performances.
Aaron Kelly sang Fly Me to the Moon
Casey James sang Blue Skies
Crystal Bowersox sang Summer Wind
Michael Lynche sang The Way You Look Tonight
Lee Dewyzesang That’s Life
At the end of the night, I was quite surprised by the performances. After weeks of believing Crystal Bowersox may be the next American Idol, tonight may have changed that. Crystal’s performance of Summer Wind seemed lacking. It wasn’t believable and was sleepy as Randy Jackson said.
Aaron Kelly sang Fly Me to the Moon and he just doesn’t have the maturity and charisma it takes to pull off a Sinatra song. Although he has a sweet voice, he just doesn’t have the experience and stamina it would take to win American Idol.
Casey James sang Blue Skies and although he looked suave and smooth in his purple and black, tonight’s performance was simply not good. He was visibly uncomfortable like a fish out of water. His voice was pitchy and he seemed to lack the confidence he has shown in prior performances.
Michel Lynche crooned The Way You Look Tonight, and his performance out shined the others up to that point. He was smooth and confident during his performance. He had the “Sinatra” look and Simon even said “everything clicked.”
Then Lee Dewyze had his turn! His performance of That’s Life blew me away! Was this really the same guy who has been the shy one and which on numerous occasions looks like he has tears in his eyes and might actually shed some? Tonight, he looked confident and gave a very strong performance. He actually seemed comfortable on stage. He was believable and pleasing to the audience.
The judges all agreed that he gave the best performance of the night. Is it enough to move him to the top? It just may be and only time will tell, but this certainly spices up things on Idol and will make the last few weeks more exciting to watch. Simply to see how this plays out.
Watch tomorrow, May 5th for the results show and see Lady Gaga who will be performing.
