American Idol’s Top 4 Sing Songs from the Cinema

by itchyfish

On Tuesday, May 11, 2010’s episode of American Idol, the top 4 took on “songs from the cinema”. Jamie Foxx was the mentor, and a great one at that-he’s both an actor and musician. This week, not only did the contestants each sing one song as usual, they were also paired up to sing a duet.

Lee DeWyze sang first, singing “Kiss From A Rose” by Seal. This is one of my favorite songs, and one that I thought he might choose. I’ll admit-it wasn’t one of his best performances. He was a little out of tune. Randy said “you didn’t do anything with this song”, and that he should have chosen a more rock song. Ellen said Randy was right, but that Lee is so good that she loved it anyway. Kara said it was one of the most difficult songs to sing, and that he got a little lost, but he’s still great. Simon said that there were so many songs to choose, that he could have chosen better and that it was a little karaoke.

Michael Lynche sang Michael Jackson’s “Will You Be There”. He was without his guitar again, and had a choir behind him. I’m not familiar with this song (yeah, I said it), so I wasn’t sure how it’s supposed to sound. I thought he didn’t do bad-but wasn’t great. Randy said it was a great song, but he didn’t love it for him. Kara said Mike “played it safe”. Simon said “at least you gave it 100 percent.”

Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze were the first to perform their duet. They sang “Falling Slowly” from the film Once. They’re both playing their guitars, and are facing each other. AMAZING!!!! I got goosebumps watching it. Honestly. Their voices work so well together, and it was beautiful. Randy said it was amazing, as did Ellen. Kara said it was one of her favorite moments of the entire season. Simon said it was a fantastic song.

Casey James was up next. He sang “Mrs. Robinson” by Simon and Garfunkle. He played a mandolin, not a guitar, and sits in the audience. He re-arranged the song a bit, and for the first time all season I kind of liked his performance. Maybe it was the mandolin? Or maybe it’s because it was different than anything else so far. I don’t know. Ellen said that she liked that he changed it up, and that she liked it. Simon said “I don’t think the song or performance had the substance required for this important night.” He also said it was lazy, and it was a strange song choice.

Crystal Bowersox sang “I’m Alright” by Kenny Loggins. She has her lampshade mic stand, and a percussionist on stage with her. I enjoyed this performance. Randy said that she’s an artist, and that she switched it up and made the song fit her. Kara agreed with Ellen and Randy, and Simon said she’s back in the game after that performance.

Casey and Mike were last to perform their duet. They sang “Have You Ever Really Loved A Women” by Bryan Adams. They’re both playing their guitars, like Lee and Crystal. I LOVE this song, and thought they’d both be great at it individually. Together? I wasn’t sure. I actually liked it, except for a few little parts. Randy said it sounded really good, Kara said it was amazing. Simon said the duets were better than the solo performances, and that Casey & Mike’s duet was really good.

So….someone has to go home tomorrow night. But who will it be? I personally think it will be Casey or Mike. I would be really upset if Lee or Crystal went home, and would like to see Mike stay another week. Bon Jovi and Daughtry will both be performing on tomorrow night’s results show-hopefully it’ll be a great show!
