American Idol was back tonight with their live music segment. This week the theme is Shania Twain songs, and Shania will also mentor the contestants. So as they celebrate the songbook of Shania Twain each contestant will be choosing a song from her play book to sing tonight. Tonight votes will be counted, and tomorrow one more person will be sent home.
Shania is famous for having turned country to pop. She changed the face of country music to become the biggest cross-over artist ever. Her third album, Come on Over, has the record for most record sales from any woman of any genre, in history. Selling over 34 million albums.
The six contestants still in the competition, listed according to my most favorites-least favorites:
Aaron Kelly, Lee Dewyze, Crystal Bowersox, Casey James, Siobhan Magnus, and Michael Lynche.
Lee Dewyze chose to sing You’re Still The One. It is probably my favorite Shania song. His performance was fantastic and I was impressed with his voice. Nothing new though, Lee is consistently great, and tonight was no exception. I love the spin he put on You’re Still The One, it sounded like he had created a brand-new song. Amazing! Randy Jackson said midways through the song Dewyze found a way to make the song his own. Ellen thought he made the song his own. Kara said his voice makes him sound relevant, and said Dewyze has come so far in this competition. Simon said he agreed with the judges and that he picked the perfect song for him. I would not want to follow after this performance, because it would be easy to pale in comparison. (A++)
Michael Lynche sang It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing. Shania said his voice moved her, when hearing his voice to her lyrics. She always said he could sing the phone book and people would melt. I was like huh? But, I’ll believe her she knows more than I do about music. I am just not impressed with Lynche’s voice, especially when in comparison with any of the other contestants. And this song seemed much too simple and tender for him, in my opinion. Simon thought his performance was a big wet and girlie. Exactly what I saw. Glad to see Mike not being cocky now, but too feminine songs for him lately. (D)
Casey James sang Don’t. Shania said he needed to feel the confidence inside a bit more. Casey admitted last week he didn’t give a new performance, and that this week he would be. I love when Casey sings with a stripped down performance. He is at his best in these moments. And his performance was amazingly connected. I loved that his voice was right on and the performance was inspired and inspiring. His voice was better than ever tonight. It really was. This song did wonders for his voice and I loved the performance. Randy said it was one of his best performances ever! Ellen said the performance was beautiful and it was his best performance to date. Kara said his performance was vulnerable and raw. Simon said it was his best performance yet. (A++)
Crystal Bowersox sang No One Needs to Know Right Now. Her voice was good, as always. She is super talented. (A)
Aaron Kelly sang I Love You Just The Way You Are. His voice is strong and I still think he has the best voice of the whole group. His performance was great! (A++)
Siobhan Magnus sang Any Man of Mine. Her voice was a weak sounding tonight, but I like her personality and attitude. It even flashed to Shania in the audience, who nice as she is, winced during a bad moment in the performance. The screaming thing at the end is getting old to me. I can’t see why the judges were thrilled, I didn’t get it. Simon said the song was good but the end was too much screaming. Simon liked the performance, he must be slipping. Really it was really bad. (D-)
So, who do you think will be going home? What performances were your favorites tonight? Tonight Lee, Casey, and Aaron get my votes tonight for best performances!
