The final three contestants on American Idol went home this past week to wow the crowds who have been cheering them on during this long competition. Now, tonight it’s down to the wire! Only two of tonight’s three will battle it out for the win next week from the Nokia Theater. Tonight each of the three will perform 2 songs, one chosen by them, the other by the judges. Let’s get started.
First up was Casey James singing “Ok It’s Alright With Me.” Oh boy, it wasn’t alright with me. This was not a good song choice for tonight in my opinion. Randy said it was just alright, and too safe for tonight. Ellen agreed it’s live now or die. It needed to blow us away. Kara said he picked a song a lot of people don’t know. I certainly didn’t know it. Simon compared Casey’s song to the salad at the beginning of a meal, like there is surely something better will come in the next course. Like Simon said, Casey’s lucky he has a second chance tonight with the judge’s choice for him. I can’t believe he chose this song on tonight of all nights. Let’s hope its better or he’ll move to #3 on my list.
Next, Crystal Bowersox sang “Come To My window” by Melissa Etheridge. She played the guitar and French harp and as usual her voice sounded great to me. Randy didn’t love the arrangement, but loved the vocals. Ellen said Melissa would be proud of her! Kara said she got a little lost but still had a good vocal. Simon said it wasn’t the most stunning performance. But he gave her credit for never compromising herself as an artist.
Third Lee Dewyze chose “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Again, this song was not what I expected to hear on this important night in the competition. I thought it was “safe.” He sounded good, but it wasn’t spectacular in my opinion. Randy said it was a brilliant song choice. He said Lee is feeling like he can win. Ellen said she is proud of him, now he’s like a gazelle instead of a lamb. Kara said round 1 goes to Lee. Simon asked why he chose the song. Lee said he loves the song. Simon thought Lee’s song was
“on the money” and that Lee not only won round 1, but he “crushed” it. Boy, what did I know? My thoughts were totally off with the judges. Oh well, that’s why I’m here on my couch and they are there!
I still think Crystal won round 1; Lee was 2, and Casey 3.
Next, clips were shown in Casey’s home State of Texas where he learned Randy and Kara’s song choice for him. They chose “Daughters” by John Mayer. Ok, I wasn’t impressed by this one either. Randy said this song fit him like a glove. Ellen said a lot of people will vote for him. She liked this song choice. Kara said it was the correct song choice. Simon agreed that it was a good song choice, however it was lazy and it didn’t have the “wow” factor.
Ellen chose “Maybe I’m Amazed” by Paul McCartney for Crystal. The song was revealed from her hometown in northern Ohio. No guitar or French harp this time, just Crystal and her amazing voice. Randy said “there’s someone else in it to win it!” Ellen said she couldn’t have asked for more. Kara said although she didn’t change it enough, she got out of her comfort zone and performed without the guitar and showed more vocal range than she has in the past. Simon said Crystal may be thanking Ellen next week for putting her in the final two.
Simon chose “Hallelujah” for Lee Dewyze. Lee did a super job on this song! He has really come a long way and I can see him giving Crystal a run for her money next week in the finale. Great job! The audience gave him a standing ovation. Randy said this was Lee’s biggest moment on the show so far. Ellen said she was glad Lee listened to Simon, and it was stunning! Kara said Lee just “owned” the entire night. Simon said he was very, very proud of Lee. Simon said Lee proved he is a great person and a great singer. Lee said this moment was amazing for him and having the judge’s approval is great.
I think Lee Dewyze won round 2; Crystal # 2, and Casey #3.
My choice for the next American Idol is Lee Dewyze based on tonight’s show.
Watch the results show tomorrow, Wednesday May 19th, 2010 when I predict Casey James will go home. The final two will be Lee and Crystal. Justin Bieber will be performing tomorrow which is another exciting reason to watch.
