Finally, one of the judges seats for season 10 of American Idol is filled. Billboard reports that Steven Tyler, the lead singer for Aerosmith, has been signed on as a judge for the popular American reality TV talent show.
Fox, characteristically, is still not commenting on the judges’ situation for American Idol, but sources close to the situation confirm that Steven Tyler has been signed. Rumors have been circulating for weeks that Tyler was in contention for one of the judges seats, but neither Tyler or Fox would confirm a deal was in the works.
Billboard is reporting that the deal is done and also had some input from Steven Tyler regarding his appearance on American Idol.
According to Billboard Steven Tyler discussed the possibility of being a judge on American Idol with the “Kid Kraddick in the Morning” syndicated radio show. At the time of the discussion Tyler only confirmed that he had been approached by American Idol, but said he had a lot going on with Aerosmith being on tour at the same time.
In light of his having been signed by Fox as a judge on American Idol his comments hold a lot of weight. Tyler said that in judging contestants that he would be honest and truthful, which may mean he is a good replacement for the brutally honest Simon Cowell. He also said he is willing to offer constructive criticism. Perhaps we can expect it to be delivered a little more kindly than Cowell, but what more can you ask than an honest evaluation from an experienced musician. And Steven Tyler is not just a musician, he is a rock superstar.
The only comment Fox has made is that a judge’s panel will be in place when American Idol audition rounds begin in mid-September.
That is just around the corner, so maybe American Idol rumors and speculation will soon be put to bed and we will find Steven Tyler, Randy Jackson, and, perhaps, Shania Twain at the judges table.
