Next Tuesday on American Idol Season 9, the Top 4 contestants will dazzle us with a “Songs From the Cinema” theme. And if you think Harry Connick Jr. was a hoot this week, expect guest mentor , Grammy award winning artist Jamie Foxx , to provide even more laughs- and hopefully some sound advice for the Idol hopefuls. What songs will the Top 4 sing on “Songs From the Cinema” week? Based on the list of movie songs on iTunes (which is a really bad list, by the way) here’s what I’d like to see:
Casey James, 27, Fort Worth, Texas- “Everything I Do (I Do It For You)”
After dodging a bullet during Frank Sinatra week, it’s do or die time for Idol’s resident hottie, Casey James. James’ best success has been when he’s done ballads, so why not take a page from earlier in the season and do a Bryan Adams song? His performance of “Heaven” during Billboard Hot 100 week impressed the judges (especially Kara) , so maybe “Everything I Do (I Do It For You)” from the Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves soundtrack would be a good choice. Of course, Casey might be feeling the burn for his guitar after last week when he seemed naked without it. If that’s the case, he may choose a ballad that has a bit more room for him to show off his guitar prowess. I’m thinking “Purple Rain”.
Lee Dewyze, 23, Mount Prospect, Ill.- “Iris”
I’m looking forward to Lee’s performance next week and this theme gives him plenty of room to stay true to himself. While he cleaned up nicely for Sinatra week, I’m ready for him to get back to his inner rocker. I’m thinking The Goo Goo Dolls song “Iris”, from the City of Angels soundtrack, would fit the bill. Another choice is the Stone Temple Pilots song, “Big Empty” from the soundtrack of the 1994 film, The Crow. Whatever he picks, I expect Lee to do well with this theme.
Michael Lynche, 26, Astoria, N.Y.- ” Endless Love”
After this week’s slip into the Bottom 2, Big Mike needs to sing a big song to stay in the game. The Lionel Richie ballad “Endless Love” is one I could definitely see him choosing. But in reality, I’d rather see Big Mike take a risk, go funky, and maybe have some fun. Curtis Mayfield’s “Superfly” would be a song I’d love to see Big Mike sing (and if he doesn’t take it, I think Casey could pull this song off too).
Crystal Bowersox, 24, Toledo, Ohio – “Summertime”
Crystal didn’t take my advice last week when I suggested “Summertime” (Sinatra recorded it in his early years and it appears on the Sinatra Sings Gershwin lp), so if you’re reading this Crystal, here’s your chance again! This song from the Porgy and Bess soundtrack would be a great one for MamaSox to take on- hey, it worked for Fantasia Barrino. Of course, that may be why Crystal won’t do it. Then again, Crystal seemed to like getting all glammed up in a black evening gown and glam updo for Sinatra week. If she wants to do that again, she should go a la Jennifer Hudson’s Dreamgirls with “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” or “One Night Only”. And since Dreamgirls is a project close to Jamie Foxx’s heart, she may even get extra mentoring points that way!
So what would you like to see the Top 4 American Idol hopefuls sing on “Songs of the Cinema” week?
