Harry Connick, Jr. was the mentor for the contestants tonight. He himself has been compared to Frank Sinatra, whose songs the idols were asked to choose from this week.
My favorite Aaron Kelly is still in the race and getting stronger each week. The judges loved his rendition of Fly Me to the Moon. They were glad he could branch out into something other than country. I hope it will keep him in the Top 3 but he has a lot of competition this week. I loved two of his other choices – You’ve Got A Way and I Believe I Can Fly. Although he is only 17, his learning curve has spiked in the last three weeks.
Lee DeWyze may very well walk away with this competition. His choice tonight -That’s Life – showed him off in a brilliant light. If he can repeat such a wonderful performance next week, I believe Lee will be our next American Idol. The judges have impressed on him throughout these many weeks that his confidence level needs to rise. I believe Harry Connick, Jr’s work with Lee has made the difference. Lee is enjoying what he is doing.
Casey James sang the Sinatra favorite Blue Skies. Not one judge gave him a positive review. I agree that Casey bombed tonight and may find himself going home tomorrow night. It is too bad; Casey doesn’t seem to have the hunger for winning that the other contestants have. However, I really liked his version of Lawdy Miss Clawdy a few weeks ago.
Michael Lynche really wowed the judges tonight when he sang Just the Way You Look Tonight. They commented that his stage presence is far superior to any of the other aspirants. He could take number 3 this week or possibly number 2. Michael is an audience favorite although he has made the bottom three a few times. The voting order may be somewhat skewed this week. We shall see.
Crystal Bowersox sang another Sinatra success in Summer Wind. I love the song and thought that Crystal did a fine job with it. The judges had other ideas. They felt that her last two choices were not good for her and could bring her down from what everyone thought was the #1 choice for this year’s American Idol. She doesn’t seem to have the passion that is seen in the other contestants.
Therefore, my order for the American Idol votes for this week from 1 to 5 is: Lee DeWyze, Aaron Kelly, Michael Lynche, Crystal Bowersox and Casey James. Only 2 and 3 might possibly be reversed.
I was so happy to see one of my favorite movie actors in the audience and looking so well – Anthony Hopkins – and it was good to have Ryan Seacrest recognize Anthony and introduce him to the audience at home and in the theater.
