This week Jamie Foxx is mentor on American Idol, the theme is songs from movies.
Just four singers are left in the competition Lee Dewyze, Crystal Bowersox, Casey James, and Michael Lynche. But only one can win to be the next American Idol. This week is expected to be the hardest week yet for the competitors, and once again, one person will go home.
Last week my favorite singer in the competition, Aaron Kelly, was sent home by AI viewers. It was sad to see him go because I considered him the best voice in the bunch. But, that’s the way it goes! Luckily, there are still a few good singers left, like Lee Dewyze. And I can’t underestimate the abilities of Crystal Bowersox or Casey James. Both of whom are very good singers, and excellent musicians. And then there’s Big Mike, who I peg to go home this week. It’s based on who has the best voice, and I am confident that it is not him.
This week Jamie Foxx mentored the remaining four contestants. Foxx worked with each contestant, preparing them for what could easily be the toughest week yet.
Lee Dewyze sang Kiss From A Rose. His voice has the gravely tone that I like and he can make his voice smooth. And that is what I like about Lee. It wasn’t his best performance, and I think a different song might have been better for him. Randy Jackson said he did nothing with the song. Ellen Degeneres said she agreed, but that he is so good. Kara Dioguardi said it was one of the most difficult songs to sing. But, she also thought he was still great, even though the arrangement was off. Simon Cowell said that their are so many brilliant songs to choose from, and that he needed to make it more original. Lee needs to bring back the energy to the stage! (B-)
Michael Lynche sang Will You Be There (from Free Willy) by Michael Jackson. Lynche admitted his goal was to make it into the top 3, which he is just one person short of. Everyone wants that, but I can’t fault him for trying to make it one more week. Randy Jackson said it was just okay for him, and that the performance didn’t really take off. Ellen said the choir behind him was something you couldn’t go wrong with. Ellen said his goal should be to win the competition, not just to make top 3. Kara said she wanted goose bumps, and that she didn’t feel that from him. She said he played it safe. Simon thought that he could have chosen thousands and thousands of songs, and his song choice was off. Simon said at least he gave it 100% and Simon felt he meant it. (C-)
And then Crystal and Lee did a duet, singing Falling Slowly from the film, Once. Their voices couldn’t be more different, except for talent where they most are practically equals. They both are certainly great singers, and even better musicians. They are each other’s biggest competition. Randy said it was a great song, by two great singers. Ellen said it was great. Kara said it was one of her favorite moments of the entire season, and that they most felt like artists. Simon thought the song was not good, but fantastic. Crystal admitted that Lee was her musical crush! (A)
Casey James sang Mrs Robinson by Simon and Garfunkel, from the film The Graduate. He picks the oldest songs in the world to sing, and that is why he probably won’t make it until the end. More than anyone, he needs to prove he can be current. We already know he can sing, and that he is a great musician, but being an artist takes more than that. Ellen liked that he changed it up. Kara said the song was a good choice. Simon thought that the song and performance wasn’t enough, and that he could have made more of an impact. Yet, Casey is still a better singer than Micheal, go figure! (D-)
Crystal Bowersox sang I’m Alright by Kenny Loggins, from the film Caddyshack. She admitted the audience and feeling in the room was a bit tense. The good thing about Crystal is she doesn’t realize how good she is. I mean she knows, but I don’t think she knows how good. Tonight she brought some excitement to the stage, after some really boring performances. She’s giving all she has to give. Randy said she is an artist, and she changed the song to fit her. Ellen said she took the song, and made it better. Kara agreed! Simon said that Crystal was back in the game. And we could all feel exactly what he was talking about! (A)
Casey James and Michael Lynche did their duet, singing Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman. Casey started out strong and he was back to being great, except for that fake Latin accent he just adopted. Casey is a much better singer than Micheal, and it was never as obvious as it was during their duet. Randy told Casey the guitar was great. Ellen said that yes, she has loved a woman. Kara said that the duets tonight were incredible, and said they were better than all of the solo performances. Simon agreed, and said well done. (B)
Tune in tomorrrow, American Idol will have performances from Daughtry and Bon Jovi.
So, after all is said and done – who did you vote for?
