American Idol continued on in the quest to crown a season 9 champion with the May 5 elimination show and the pool of hopefuls dropped to just the top 4. The program featured performances by Lady Gaga and the week’s mentor Harry Connick Jr., as well as the eventual elimination of teen sensation Aaron Kelly from the competition. Here’s the play by play.
The May 5 American Idol results show opened with a medley of Frank Sinatra tunes delivered by the top 5, including lone female representative Crystal Bowersox, Lee DeWyze, Casey James, Aaron Kelly and Michael Lynche. The performance started off weakly with a lot of strangely breathy singing, but picked up steam throughout and finished on a much higher note.
Up next was the world premiere of the top 5’s Ford Music video. It seemed to circle on the love of a yellow green Ford. Mmm-kay. A taped segment detailing the contestants’ previous Tuesday lives contrasted with their current AI Tuesdays aired next. Cute and all, but definitely a time-filler. Host Ryan Seacrest addressed the top 5 afterward, asking Michael Lynche if he slept last night. He turned to Crystal Bowersox next, and asked how she liked being the only girl left; she said she enjoys being on the the guys. And then, a little early AI elimination action as Ryan instructed Lee DeWyze to stand in the center of the stage. The often quiet DeWyze endured the usual questioning from Seacrest, and Simon Cowell praised him for finally, finally believing in himself. And then he was proclaimed safe to sing again. One down, three to go.
Since we love live performances and the AI results can’t all be spilled right off the bat, the ever-interesting Lady Gaga – who my husband calls simply “that strange woman” – took to the stage with a performance of her newest hit, Alejandro. Clad in a signature bizarre look that I can’t even begin to describe, except for noting the presence of black tulle, netting and stiletto ankle boots, Gaga exercised her strong pipes while surrounded by a troop of men wearing what can be best be called a cross between granny panties and bike shorts.
After a break, a taped segment featuring the American Idol top 5’s time with the week’s mentor Harry Connick Jr. aired. Apparently he’s a big goofball. Shortly thereafter, Connick Jr. took to the stage with a performance of his own. Women swooned, Kara DuoGuardi leapt to her feet. Then the top 5 took to the stage to sing some of the popular singer’s tunes. Once the performance ended, Connick relayed a humorous story about the first time he and wife Jill Goodacre met Frank Sinatra. Ha. He’s a surprisingly funny guy.
With just 10 minutes remaining in the May 5 American Idol results show and three contestants not yet aware of their fates, Seacrest resumed the elimination process by sending Crystal Bowersox to the far side of the stage. Next, he instructed Michael Lynche to start a group on the near side of the stage. Shortly thereafter, Aaron Kelly was told to join Big Mike and Casey James was told to stand beside Crystal. After the usual teasing and time-torture, Michael and Aaron were presented as the week’s bottom two.
After the evening’s final commercial break, it was time for the big reveal, and Aaron Kelly was eliminated from American Idol season 9. After an extended embrace and words of wisdom from Big Mike, the smiling teen said adieu with Fly Me to the Moon.
