Ryan Seacrest cleverly dubbed Shania Twain “the one who made country pop” on Tuesday night’s American Idol. The show was the one month anniversary before the winning contestant will be crowned the next American Idol. She returned to help coach them herself last week. The final 6 sang from Shania Twain’s catalog for the show.
Lee Dewyze sang “You’re Still the One” from Shania Twain’s 1997 album, Come on Over, which is the best-selling country album of all time. The judges unanimously enjoyed it. However Kara Dioguardi said she “wasn’t sure if he related to the song” being that it is a love song and there was a lack of that emotion showing in his performance. Simon thought it was the perfect song out of Shania’s catalog but commented on the weird facial expressions Lee made during his piece.
Mike Lynche was up next. He sang a version of “It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing” that felt a little like R&B and made Shania a little misty eyed. Ellen compared Big Mikes performance to Luther Vandross. Simon said the analogy was “spot on.”
Last Night on American Idol Casey James Made His Move Toward The Top. Casey sang “Don’t” and nailed it. He took the judges advice from last week and composed a new approach to his music. Usually he likes to rock out but this new style made a better fit, it sounded so natural. It was easily one of his best performances yet and certainly the best performance of the night.
Crystal Bowersox’ performance of “No One Needs to Know Right Now” was surprisingly average. The front runner definitely did not live up to her potential. The judges were not impressed. She sang it with a country edge. That could have been her biggest mistake. The best performers of the night put their own edge to Shania’s music and that’s what made their performance stand out.
Aaron Kelly, another usual front runner, gave a strong performance he sang “You’ve Got a Way” and changed the lyrics from “when we make love,” so he could dedicate the song to his mother. It was very sweet. All of the judges enjoyed his performance. Even Simon didn’t have one negative thing to say.
The last of American Idol’s final 6 to perform was glass blower Siobhan Magnus. Siobhan sang “Any Man of Mine” and took the country approach instead of putting her own mark on the song. Randy loved it, Ellen said it was fantastic and Simon liked it but thought the ending was a bit over the top. He even went as far as to say she looked as if she “were giving birth” at the end of the song.
Over all the nights performances went very well. Siobhan and Crystal were not spectacular, but they were both still good. At the start of Tuesday night’s American Idol Shania expressed some concern for the guys. She had wondered how well they would be able to perform her feminine songs. Surprisingly the men did very well dare I say better than the women even.
