Last night was Shania Twain night on American Idol. The Idol hopefuls were both mentored by the Beautiful Shania and had to perform songs of hers.
The first one to perform was Lee DeWyze who sang Still the One. This is one of my favorite songs of all time and the anthem for my husband and I. Lee put his contemporary stamp on it. I didn’t like the beginning when I listened to it at first but when I listened to it for the second time I started to see what he was doing and it was actually pretty good. Randy said, It was one of his favorite songs of all time. He said he found his sweet spot halfway through and did a pretty good job. Ellen said he did more than a pretty good song and he really made it his own. Kara said the sound of his voice makes every song relevant, and that he cracked a smile a few times. Simon agreed with everyone else that it was the perfect song from her catalog for him. Then he started to say something about weird voices when he was interrupted by Kara and did not get to finish.
Next up was Michael Lynche who said it only hurts when I am breathing. I have never heard this song but it is a really good song with really good lyrics. Michael also put his spin on the song and made it sound kind of like a mix of a song from a musical, an R&B song, and a gospel song. I think it sounded really good, but I like his particular style but I don’t know if others who are only looking for current type music will like it. Randy said he definitely found his niche, Ellen liked it and said it felt like Luther Vandross was singing it. Kara thought he just changed it enough to put his mark on it. Simon said he saw what Ellen was saying about Luther. Then he went to say that the performance was a bit wet, then went on to say it was a little girlie. Shania loved the performance and even cried, she said he really got to her.
The third person to perform was Casey James. Casey sang Don’t. Casey went for the acustic guitar and sat down and sang in the ideas. He sounded really good. He had really good control over his voice. He even broke in to a little falsetto. I closed my eyes and just listened and it was really nice. Randy said, he thought it was one of Casey’s best performances, Ellen agreed she thought it was his best as well. Kara said he didn’t behind his guitar and he was vulnerable and that was what he needed. Simon said that he thinks that he had a wakeup call last week (Casey was in the bottom 3 last week). He agreed that it was Casey’s best performance yet, and he suggested he give Shania a big kiss which he did.
The fourth Person to perform was Crystal Bowersocks. She sang No One Needs to Know Right Now. She said the song was a big hint to her boyfriend to propose I believe. Crystal did it up in country style and didn’t try to change a country song in to a pop song. It was a cute performance and she showed how versatile she is and showed that she can sing any style with ease. It was not the kind of wow performance we have all become accustomed to with her, but it was fun and good all the same. Randy said it wasn’t her best but he still liked it. Ellen said it was like picking the worst color in a rainbow of colors meaning, it was not her favorite, but it was still good basically. Kara pretty much said the same thing in a different way, and Simon pretty much did too, he said it was limp and the only one of her performances so far that he has not really enjoyed that much. I say even this probably was her least exciting performance it was still better than some past Idol hopefuls best performances.
The fifth performer was Aaron Kelly. Aaron sang It’s in the Way You Love Me. He had some really nice moments and in times it sounded really nice to me. At other times when he carried the phrases it was a little shaky, he of course hit the big note at the end. The judges all thought it sounded sincere and I will agree with that. Randy said it was his wheelhouse meaning country was good for him. Ellen said she was impressed with the amount of emotion and depth he had for this song was really good for someone his age. Kara agreed with Ellen, she said it was good he changed one of the lines that was a little more mature and the audience all said, “awwww” when he said he was singing it to his mom. Simon said he has struggled the last couple of weeks, but this week he did a good job and sounded sincere and he did really well.
The sixth person to perform was Siobhan Magnus. Siobhan sang Any Man of Mine. I can honestly say that Siobhan performed. I don’t really know if I can say she sang well. She always has really good moments in songs, but she also always has not so good moments. I had to watch it on the DVR to decide how I felt about it. Like I said when I watched it she was performing which made it n interested performance, but then I closed my eyes and just listened it wasn’t great. It was OK, but I can’t say it was great and when she screamed I didn’t get it at first but she pulled it out and ended it well. Randy loved it, he loved the look. He seems to always like how she dresses. Ellen said, Way to Pull the Shania Twaine Out of the Station. Kara said Siobhan was back. Simon also liked it but said when she did the scream that it was like she was giving birth. I have to agree. It was not a great vocal but it was a fun performance.
So that is the recap of last nights April 27th 2010 Idol performances. I will also mention at this point that last week’s Idol Gives Back show raised over 45 million dollars which just goes to show how generous Americans really are even in hard times.
I don’t know who will go home tonight but at this point it’s going to stink no matter who goes home. It is always hard when we get to this point and someone has to go home weather they deserve to or not.
