Tuesday night on American Idol Season 9, the Top 5 contestants performed songs by the legendary Frank Sinatra, with a little help from this week’s mentor, Harry Connick Jr.- who proved to be the most involved mentor ever! But how did the Top 5 do on Sinatra week?
With Sinatra’s daughters- Tina and Nancy- in the audience, the pressure was on as the Top 5 tried to impress. Harry Connick Jr. was on stage too- accompanying the contestants on piano. In a touching moment, the Sinatra daughters presented judge Simon Cowell with a monogrammed hanky from ol’ Blue Eyes himself, a memento that Cowell vowed he would treasure for the rest of his life.
And now on to the Top 5 performances this week:
Aaron Kelly, 17, Sonestown, Pa.- “Fly Me to The Moon”
There’s no denying this kid has a great voice. I thought his performance was corny, campy. Judge Ellen DeGeneres joked that the piano (that Connick was playing) was a little pitchy. Haha Ellen- this would be the first of several piano jokes of the evening. Kara DioGuardi told Aaron that he needed more charisma. And Simon Cowell said, “If he [Frank] was a lion, you were a mouse.” Still, with the demise of Tim Urban, Aaron Kelly has the tween vote locked in. Those little girls are texting as we speak.
Casey James, 27, Fort Worth, Texas- “Blue Skies”
After telling an anecdote about a friend who called him up this week about an upcoming gig at the Circle Inn (it paid 50 dollars and a free meal), James joked “It was a close call”. James tried to croon Sinatra’s “Blue Skies” and I thought he succeeded. Call me a fan, but I thought he sang it! But the judges panned his effort, with Ellen saying the performance felt very stiff to her. Kara told him he sounded like a lamb (not a compliment). And Simon told James he seemed “a bit embarrassed… a bit awkward.” Then Cowell even made this dig :”The good news is, you’ve got a booking for next week. ” Ouch!
Crystal Bowersox, 24, Toledo, Ohio- “Summer Wind”
MamaSox has been getting personal lately and this week was no exception– although she didn’t reveal exactly what this song meant to her. Still, a gorgeous Crustal sang a subdued love song, which Randy Jackson labeled “a little sleepy”. Simon said it felt ” a little indulgent”.
Michael Lynche, 26, Astoria, N.Y. – “The Way You Look Tonight”
With his fedora in tow (I knew someone would do it!), Big Mike delivered one of the top performances of the night- at least by the judges standards. I personally didn’t love it, but Randy called it unbelievable and said, “Big Mike is in it to win it!” Simon said “it all clicked”.
Lee Dewyze, 24, Mount Prospect, Ill.- “That’s Life”
Harry Connick Jr. said what I was thinking- DeWyze looked just like him! And he sang well too, managing to keep his raspy, inner rocker alive while singing this crooner classic. After DeWyze belted out an amazing version of this Sinatra song, Randy Jackson praised the arrangement. Ellen quipped she was distracted by Harry’s organ. Oh, Ellen! But she also added that had this been finale night, DeWyze would have just won the whole thing. Simon deemed it “by far the best performance of the night.”
Tuesday night one unlucky contestant will be sent packing. Who do you think should go home?
