Tuesday night on American Idol Season 9, the Top 6 contestants performed songs by their mentor, country music star Shania Twain. And although Twain is considered the queen of country music, she’s also mastered the pop-country crossover, which meant the Idol hopefuls could take their song pick and go in just about any direction.
Here’s how the Top 6 fared this week:
Lee Dewyze, 24, Mount Prospect, Ill.- “You’re Still the One”
Lee took one of Twain’s most well known songs and truly made it his own, with his trademark rockin’ edge. Kara acknowledged that DeWyze has come a long way and “even cracked a smile a few times.” Simon called it “absolutely the perfect song.”
Michael Lynche, 26, Astoria, N.Y. – “It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing”
I wondered if one of the guys would try and pick this song and sure enough, Big Mike did it. His vocals were smooth with Ellen comparing Mike to Luther Vandross. But Simon called the performance “‘a little bit wet…a little bit girly”. No matter, Shania Twain herself was teary eyed from the whole thing.
Casey James, 27, Fort Worth, Texas- “Don’t”
Hottie Casey James learned last week the he hasn’t been doing anything new, so he sang this week. Of his song choice, James said, “It’s a singing song. I don’t think I’ve sang yet.” And he did, delivering one of his best performances all season. Randy and Simon agreed it was his best, then Simon ordered James to give Shania a big kiss.
Crystal Bowersox, 24, Toledo, Ohio- “No One Needs To Know”
Crystal got highly personal with this song, saying, “This song is a message to my boyfriend. I’m dropping hints here and there…. He’ll man up one of these days”. I’m assuming she wants him to put a ring on it. Anyway, unlike the other performers, Crystal went way country with this one. And while the other three judges all gave her performance mediocre reviews, Simon bluntly said, “Shocker, we don’t like Crystal this week….it was limp.”
Aaron Kelly, 17, Sonestown, Pa.- “You Got Away”
Every time I think this kid’s time is up, he delivers another standout performance. Kara gave him praise for changing up the line “We made love”. Glad he did, as Aaron later said he was singing the song to his mom!
Siobhan Magnus, 20, Marstons Mills, Mass- “Any Man of Mine”
Siobhan went country with this song (but still sported a punk rock look) and she was sure to include her trademark SCREAM at the end. It went on and on. The judges loved it, although Simon did say it sounded as though she were giving birth.
Wednesday night’s results show will feature performances by Sons of Sylvia, Lady Antebellum, Rascal Flats and Shakira. And of course one unlucky contestant will be sent packing. Who do you think should go home?
