He started out his stint on American Idol in the cheesiest of ways, awkwardly obliging when judges Kara DioGuardi and Victoria Beckham asked him to take his shirt off during his audition on Denver. Since then, American Idol finalist Casey James has been touted as “eye candy” (although DioGuardi acknowledged he was “ear candy” too). After an unexpected land in the bottom 3 this week, what should Casey James’ game plan for next week be?
Casey James has had some memorable performances this season. His acoustic performance of Bryan Adams’ “Heaven” garnered him praise from the judges, as did his updated take on John Lennon’s “Jealous Guy”. He’s also had a few bumps in the road- namely the Huey Lewis tune “Power of Love” and this week’s rather dull version of the Fleetwood Mac song, “Don’t Stop”.
Wednesday night was a close call for James, when he suddenly found himself in the bottom 3 and this close to going home. Tim Urban got the boot instead, but this week’s results were surely a wakeup call for Casey James.
He’s a multi-talented blues guitarist (although he’s gotten some flack for jamming on his electric guitar too much on the singing competition), but for Casey James, song choice is extremely important . He seems to do better with slower ballads, where he isn’t tempted to get crazed on the guitar. And Kara gets all swoony-eyed when he sings love songs, which results in more positive comments from her.
With Shania Twain week coming up, James may find himself in hot water again if he doesn’t pick the right song. Twain’s song catalog contains a lot of gender-specific songs that wouldn’t sound right if James tried to change up the words (songs like “Man I Feel Like a Woman”, ” “The Woman In Me Needs The Man In You”). Still, I think Casey could pull off an acoustic, stripped down or blues version of one of Twain’s songs- he should definitely stay away from the pop country and change up the arrangement. So which Shania Twain song do you think Casey James should pick?
