An Amber Alert has been issued by the Missouri State Police in the case of missing 4-year-old Alisa Maier, who was last seen playing with her 6-year-old brother in their own front yard in Louisiana, Missouri. According to KMOV in St. Louis, police said Alisa Maier and her brother had been playing in the front yard alone for about 10 minutes around 8:00 p.m. Monday evening when the kidnapping occurred. The little boy witnessed the incident, providing Louisiana Police details of the vehicle and the driver who took his sister.
The brother told police that a black four-door car pulled up in front of his house and a man got out, grabbed his sister and put her in his car. He described the man as young, perhaps in his teens or twenties, white, and having dark, curly hair.
Louisiana Police Chief Richard Hughes, after learning from the family that there were no relatives or friends who might have taken the child, says he believes the kidnapping was a random act. Hughes called in the FBI and the combined group of investigators began looking into several leads. Hughes said that video surveillance tapes have been requested from area businesses, including a gas station from near the residence from which Alisa Maier was kidnapped.
Neighbors told police that an unidentified black car had been seen driving down the street several times before the kidnapping took place. Police believe the abductor had driven the route several times waiting for an opportunity.
It was a similar act by Phillip Garrido back in June 1991 that saw young Jaycee Lee Dugard, then 11 years old, snatched off the streets of her home town on the way to school. Her stepfather saw it as it happened: the vehicle pulling up, the car door opening, a stranger grabbing his stepdaughter. Although stories like Jaycee Dugard’s end with the kidnap victim found, Jaycee Lee Dugard was 29 years old when she walked into a police station with her abductor and told them who she was.
The issuance of the Amber Alert and quick actions by authorities, such as requesting the video surveillance tapes, might ensure that finding Alisa Maier is quickly accomplished.
Door-to-door searches have been and are being conducted and volunteers have gathered to begin looking for the little girl. Alisa Maier is described as a white girl about three feet tall, weighing approximately 40 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes. Alisa Maier was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jean shorts when she was taken.
