Walk into any scrapbook store and you will discover that there are literally thousands of sheets of patterned scrapbook paper for every occasion imaginable but scrapbook paper is not just for scrapbooking. Think outside the box and find new ways to use scrapbook paper. It can be used for decoupage, gift tags, bookmarks, homemade cards, altered items and even for paper ornaments.
Decoupaging a wooden picture frame with scrapbook paper is easily done with a few coats of Modge Podge and scraps of paper. Select patterened paper in coordinating shades or use scraps left over from a scrapbook project. Cut or tear pieces of scrapbook paper into one or two inch pieces. Brush a light coat of Modge Podge on the wooden picture frame and position the scraps in an eye pleasing manner. Once the pieces are in place, brush several coats of Modge Podge over the finished project giving each coat time to dry.
Gift tags and bookmarks can also be crafted from scrapbook paper. With all the die cutting machines out there such as the Cricut, Quickutz, and the Big Shot, there are endless possibilities to make creative and uniquely personal gift tags, cards and bookmarks. Whether you use a manual die cutting machine or an electronic one, there are numerous dies available. Use patterned paper and cardstock to cut out shapes and words to create beautiful tags and embellish them to give your tags some bling.
Have a special occasion coming up? Make a heartfelt card just for that special person. Cut a piece of solid color cardstock 8 inches by 12 inches and fold in half so the card is 8 inches wide by 6 inches long. Select a slightly smaller piece of coordinating patterned paper and glue it on the front. Decorate with die cuts and customize your card. Cut a solid color paper to glue on the inside of the card and sign your greeting.
Altered items are fun to make and altering a book is a cool way to use scrapbook paper in a different way. Choose a textbook that you are no longer using or pick one up cheaply from a thrift store or book fair. To alter a book, glue several pages together to make it sturdy enough to support the additional weight of the scrapbook pages. Select a theme for your altered book and let it flow throughout the book.
Another alternative way to use scrapbook paper is to make paper ornaments from it. Select patterned paper and cardstock for the holiday and either use cookie cutters for ornament patterns or use die cutting equipment. Glue and glitter the ornaments punching a hole in the top for hanging.
Scrapbook paper is not just for scrapping pictures. There are many alternative uses for it. Think creatively and find other uses for it.
