Kids and karate! Fun or are we just waxing off this one? All Star Karate is a new Wii title from the company THQ, it is compatible with the Wii’s full motion control and gives gamers the chance to learn, practice, and fight their ways to mastering karate all in a fun and comedic fashion!
Playing through this game it reminded me of the Karate Kid movie series. This is what basically happens, an old man who happens to be very skilled in the art of karate decides to teach you and guide you through many battles and trials. The main goals of the game are to obtain high ranks in belts and beat anyone that comes your way. Nothing too special but what did you really expect from a rated E for all Wii title based on karate?
Game Play 4/5
I have to give this one a higher score because all of the game play utilizes the wii motions. You can use the wii remote plus the nunchuck or you could go all out and just use two wii remotes. It looks pretty funny when watching people play. You attack by pressing buttons and waving the controls around. It is somewhat responsive and it is funny watching the fiction characters beat the crap out of each other. There is a arcade story mode where you go through battles attaining new ranks. There is a move editor that allows you to create combos. The game play is solid but again, nothing too groundbreaking here
The graphics here have been compared to the punch-out series with its 3d and fun animations. It is very similar and acts the same. The stages you fight in are pretty lively, there are stages like the dojo which are detailed and arenas like fighting outside. You can even brawl near the beach! The characters all look smooth and there’s nothing wrong with it.
Punch, punch punch! Smack, smack, smack! The sounds of hitting your opponent or hearing a blocked attack satisfy what it’s supposed to do. Besides the sound effects there are music and voices. Music is your generic upbeat fighting music with the occasional japanese style music when in dojos. The thing that kind of annoyed me is the voices. They scream and yell a lot! It’s funny but can get annoying
There are things to unlock such as new ranks and mini-games. Some of the mini games consist of blocking ninja stars with a sword and fighting odd enemies. The thing that might prolong this game’s shelf life is its multiplayer. You can get four Wii remotes and grab a friend. You can bash and fight to your heart’s content, just be careful not to smack each other in the face. It’s just a game!
This game is advertised towards children. It is a nice way to introduce them into the world of competitive fighting. It has some real lessons but the overall comedy takes about the morals of respect and manners. The game is not to be taken too seriously and is meant to be a quick fun activity that gets players moving. Recommend you buy if you have children. It’ll keep them busy!
The price is around $19.99
