Another Alec Baldwin SNL episode wrapped up Season 35 last night and this Baldwin SNL show was particularly noteworthy in a few ways. First, it had to directly follow up last week’s event with Betty White and the women of comedy. But if anyone could follow up that extravaganza, it would be the most recurring host in Saturday Night Live history. After threatening to do so for years, Baldwin finally equaled Steve Martin’s hosting record with his 15’th hosting job. But this record-setting Alec Baldwin SNL episode was his first season finale, bringing an end to the latest landmark Saturday Night Live year.
Baldwin and Steve Martin cannot seem to get away from each other, whether they’re hosting the Oscars or doing Saturday Night Live bits together. The last few times Martin’s record was threatened, he took violent action. But once this Alec Baldwin SNL show tied the record, all Martin could do was give a video taped greeting that Baldwin interrupted.
The record-setting host came on after a week where he gave a commencement speech for NYU at Yankee Stadium. After he gave a Saturday Night Live commencement speech for Season 35, Baldwin went on with the rest of his 15’th show.
The Alec Baldwin SNL finale had to follow an episode of big events and sketches. So they toned out the epic events and had a normal episode to wrap things up. Andy Samberg had one more digital short song while on drugs, while Baldwin insulted a swim team while giving them awards, and hosted a ‘Timecrowave’ infomercial. He was also the dad to parent-obsessed child Bedilia, weeks after Tina Fey played her mother.
Weekend Update brought back Snooki, Stefon and Garth and Kat, while Grady Wilson had an international themed sex position video this time. The last sketch of the Alec Baldwin SNL episode, and the last sketch of Season 35, had Baldwin as an incomprehensible sniper drill instructor. By then, they had to go to another Tom Petty performance to fill the last few minutes.
With the 15’th Alec Baldwin SNL show, another year of Saturday Night Live is over. This was another milestone year with Season 35, which came a year after one of their biggest seasons, thanks to the election. The show needed events other than an election to pass the time, though they won’t have that problem to start the 2010-11 year.
The season started with a new cast member dropping the f-bomb, then it furthered Taylor Swift’s breakout year, brought back Jon Hamm and Tina Fey, and finally bowed down to Betty White. The Baldwin SNL finale had the more modest goal of making hosting history – and now Martin needs to make a movie fast so he can plug it and get to No. 16 first.
