The U.S. Food and Drug Administration in February 2010 had ordered new warning labels for this medication along with the medications of Foradil, Serevent and Symbicort. The FDA is now alerting asthmatic patients to refrain from using these medications as the only source or as a long term source for asthma symptom control. The medication is in the category of long acting beta antagonists (LABAs). If anyone yo u know is using this medication they should contact their primary care physician immediately. The FDA is now alerting the public that use of Advair or any of the above medications can add to the acuteness of asthma. If used in long term duration the medications can lead to hospitalization and in some cases death.
Advair blends two active ingredients which is to help halt asthmatic symptoms such as shortness of breath. The medication was never intended to be a cure for asthma. In addition it is to relax irritated and restricted airways in COPD patients. The two ingredients in Advair is Advair, floticasone, a steroid drug to decrease inflammation. The other ingredient is salmeterol, a beta 2 agonist used to expand the airways long term.
Advair has been prescribe to patients of all ages. Currently more information is still coming to light over the side effects from this medicine. Some of these side effects are intensely grave and there have been reports of up to 4,000 deaths associated to the side effects of the medication. Weitz and Luxenberg Advair attorneys are checking into these reports thoroughly.
Serevent which is also manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, contains the same bronchodilator as Advair, and has been associated with several deaths and injuries.
In 1996 the Sameterol Multi-Center Asthma Research Trail had commenced. The 28 week long trail measured the results of Serevent against a fake drug. Among the 13,179 persons using the sameterol drug, 13 persons had fatal asthma attacks caused by just the medication. For analyzation purposes it was noted that three out of the 13,176 persons taking placebos died during the trail. The chances of having a fatal asthma attack from the sameterol drug was greater among African Americans.
Since Advair contains the sameterol drug the clinical trail findings were applied to both medications. In August of 2003 the black box warning was issued by the FDA to be put on all Advair and Serevent product information. This powerful warning makes patients aware about the small but important chance of having a fatal asthma attack while using this medication.
July 2005 has brought upon the FDA advisory panel consisting of 14 lung experts in deciding the safety of these asthma and COPD treatments. The 14 lung experts all agreed to keep the medication on the market. Their reasoning was that the benefits of these drugs are greater than the risks they present to patients.

More than twenty million persons in the United States suffer from asthma. It has been estimated that by the year 2025 there will be 100 million persons who suffer from the disease.
More and more persons today are trying alternative therapies to treat asthma. After all the drug recalls its no wonder persons are returning back to the basics of nature and non prescription drugs that have recently been witnessed through recalls and lawsuits.
There has been limited research done to date as to what type of treatments for asthma are affective and which therapies work best for what kind of asthma.
Here are a few alternative therapies that have been tried and are readily available.
Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine
Acupuncturist will first determine what type of asthma you have presented. Some forms are induced by allergens, cold air, anxiety and severe rhinitis. Treatments include specified acupuncture on specific points and herbal treatments.
Study trails have been conducted in chiropractic care for treating asthma patients using different techniques including spinal manipulation. The conclusion of eight different studies have indicated that asthmatic patients displayed markable improvements and asthma patients can greatly benefit from the use of chiropractic care.
Naturopathic medicine uses an array of natural treatments for asthma which provides long term duration of relief from the symptoms.
Treatments can include dietary supplements, herbal medicine, nutrition and hydrotherapy.
There are two types of naturopathic practitioners. Naturopathic physicians who have the designation of ND or NMD. They are licensed and graduated from doing four years in training and another four years in training in alternative therapies concentrating on areas such as nutrition and acupuncture.
Traditional Naturopaths are the other version of practitioners. They do not follow a preset training and come from numerous backgrounds. Organizations like the National Association of Certified Natural Health Professionals offer the training for these practitioners.
Considering all the side effects of prescribed medications it seems worth the effort and the value of your health to look into alternative therapies. Please do remember alternative or complimentary therapies are not meant to replace conventional therapies or medications.
