Today’s episode of All My Children was bittersweet as Adam Chandler (played by David Canary) said goodbye to Pine Valley.
It had been rumored for a while that David would be retiring from the show since filming had been moved from New York City to Hollywood to save money on production costs. He decided to follow the show to LA but his residence remained in Connecticut.
David had been on AMC since 1983. He also played Stuart Chandler (Adam’s identical twin brother) whom was shot and killed by Adam last year. Stuart, however had made a few appearances this year as a ghost, one of which was just shown yesterday.
In Adam’s last episode today, he was running after Brooke English (his ex-wife) whom he had recently fallen back in love with after she returned to town amongst the news that J.R. (Adam’s son and heir to the Chandler fortune) had gone into a coma due to his Cancer and was in desperate need of a bone marrow transplant. Though Brooke was not a match for J.R., she decided to remain in Pine Valley for a while and even take up her old job as a writer for Tempo magazine.
From the minute Brooke came back to Pine Valley, Adam began to rekindle his old feelings for his ex. Although he had been married to Annie for a few months, you could see that their relationship was starting to change. Annie, who was many years his junior had a brief kissing session with his nephew Scott a few months back and as of recent had slept with his son J.R.
Adam caught J.R. and Annie in bed together on yesterday’s show which was the lead up to him chasing Brooke to the airport as she had decided to leave Pine Valley for good. Brooke had borrowed Ericka Kane’s private jet to fly out of Pine Valley rather quickly. She knew that Adam was falling back in love with her and she could not let her feelings get the best of her since Adam was still married to Annie.
When Adam arrived at the airport to inform Brooke that he was divorcing Annie for cheating on him, he was upset only to find that her flight had in fact already taken off. He clung to the window overlooking the runway and felt for a minute as though he had lost her. After a quick phone call to Ericka and the pilot of the plane, he was able to have the plane turned around.
Brooke thought she was on her way to Paris so when the pilot landed back in Pine Valley she was shocked to get off of the plane only to see a “Welcome to Pine Valley” sign staring her in the face. She was even more shocked when she saw Adam appear from behind that sign.
They proceeded to have a long conversation about what J.R. and Annie had done and how he knew his marriage was over and he couldn’t live without Brooke in his life. Brooke finally gave in and started crying and kissing Adam. They wound up talking on a park bench for hours about how they still both loved each other and wanted to spend the rest of their years together.
Adams final scene was of he and Brooke exiting the park together, in love and planning a future of traveling to Paris and the Islands for some much needed rest and relaxation.
Both the character of Adam and David will be greatly missed by many. Thank goodness they left a window of opportunity open for him to make a return to the show.
