Being from the state of New Jersey almost my entire life, I find it interesting to find out when certain actresses are also from this state.
Here, I’ll examine some of the actresses that were born or are from New Jersey, what part of New Jersey they are from, what they are famous for and what is scheduled in their future. Feel free to add anyone I may have missed.
Joan Bennett: Palisades Park
Joan Bennett is known for her film noir movie roles in films such as 1944’s The Woman in the Window and 1945’s Scarlet Street. She also starred in 1929’s The Mississippi Gambler, 1930’s Moby Dick, 1931’s Hush Money, 1933’s Little Women and 1936’s Two in a Crowd. She also guest-starred in various TV programs, like Danger, Climax!, Mr. Broadway and Dr. Simon Locke. Bennett was born in Palisades Park, NJ.
Joanna Cassidy: Haddonfield
Joanna Cassidy was born in Camden, NJ and raised in Haddonfield, NJ. She starred in films such as 1974’s Bank Shot, 1976’s Stay Hungry, 1982’s Blade Runner, 1988’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit, 1991’s Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead and 2009’s Stay Cool. 2010’s films include Flying Lessons, Anderson’s Cross and The American Standards. She also starred in several TV shows, such as Mission: Impossible, The Roller Girls, 240-Robert, Dallas, Trapper John, M.D., Falcon Crest, Buffalo Bill, Dudley, Melrose Place, Superman, Diagnosis Murder, Boston Legal and L.A. Law. Recently, she’s guest-starred on shows like Hawthorne, Criminal Minds, Desperate Housewives, Heroes an Allen Ball’s excellent series Six Feet Under.
Kirsten Dunst: Point Pleasant
Kirsten Dunst is a well-known American actress who was born in Point Pleasant, NJ. She starred in TV shows like Sisters, Touched by an Angel, ER and Stories from my Childhood. As far as movies, one of Dunst’ best known roles was in 1994’s Interview with a Vampire, 1994’s Little Women, 1995’s Jumanji, 1999’s Dick, The Virgin Suicides, 2000’s Bring it On, 2001’s Crazy/Beautiful, 2002’s Spiderman, 2003’s Mona Lisa Smile, 2004’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, 2006’s Marie Antoinette and 2007’s Spiderman 3. In 2011, Dunst is scheduled to star in the films Upside Down, Melancholia and On the Road.
Vera Farmiga: Clifton
Vera Farmiga is a Ukrainian/American actress who was born in Clifton, NJ. She starred in 1998’s Return to Paradise, 2000’s Autumn in New York, 2001’s 15 Minutes, 2003’s Dummy, 2004’s Mind the Gap and The Manchurian Candidate. She also starred in 2004’s Down to the Bone, for which she won the Special Jury Prize in the Sundance Festival and the Los Angeles Film Association Award for Best Actress. In 2006 she starred in Running Scared, Breaking and Entering and the infamous role of Madolyn in The Departed. In 2008, she starred in The Boy in Striped Pajamas and Nothing But the Truth, and in 2009 she starred opposite George Clooney as Alex Goran in Up in the Air. For this film, she won the International Cinephile Society Award and the Vancouver Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress, along with nine nominations.
Janeane Garofalo: Newton
Besides being a writer and comedian, Janeane Garofalo is a well-known actress who was born in Newton, NJ. She has starred in numerous television shows, such as The Tom Green Show, The Henry Rollins Show, Saturday Night Live, Seinfeld, the Simpsons, Law and Order, the King of Queens, Mad About You, Home Improvement, Felicity, King of the Hill, Two and a Half Men, Strangers with Candy, Greek and Stella. As far as movies, she starred in 1994’s Reality Bites, 1995’s Now and Then, 1996’s The Truth About Cats and Dogs, 1997’s Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion, 1998’s Half Baked, 1999’s Dogma and 200 Cigarettes, 2001’s The Laramie Project and Wet Hot American Summer, 2003’s Wonderland, 2005’s Stay and Southland Tales. Due out in 2010 is For Better or for Worse.
Laura San Giacomo: West Orange
Laura San Giacomo is an actress who was born in West Orange, NJ. She starred in television shows like The Equalizer, Miami Vice, The Stand, Gargoyles, Batman Beyond, Veronica Mars, In Plain Sight and Saving Grace. Her most famous role is as Maya Gallo in Just Shoot Me!, opposite David Spade and George Segal. She also starred in 1990’s Pretty Woman, 1991’s Under Suspicion, 1997’s The Apocalypse and Suicide Kings, 2003’s A House on a Hill, 2005’s Havoc and 2006’s The Last Guy on Earth.
Anne Hathaway: Millburn
Anne Hathaway is a well-known actress who was raised in Millburn, NJ. Although she got her start in 1999’s Get Real, most of her career work is involved in movies. She starred in 2001’s The Princess Diaries, 2002’s Nicholas Nickleby, 2004’s Ella Enchanted and The Princess Diaries 2 and 2005’s Havoc. In 2005 she also began to take on more serious roles, such as the role of Lureen Twist in Brokeback Mountain. In 2006 she played Andy opposite Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada, along with the 2007 comedy Get Smart. In 2008 she starred in Jonathan Demme’s Rachel Getting Married, in which she won and was nominated for several awards. In 2009 she starred opposite Kate Hudson in Bride Wars, as well as Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. She is due to star in 2010’s Love and Other Drugs and The Fiancée. She is currently working on 2011’s Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland.
Linda Hunt: Morristown
Linda Hunt is the Academy-award winning actress who starred in 1982’s The Year of Living Dangerously. She also starred in 1984’s Dune, 1990’s Kindergarten Cop, 1991’s If Looks Could Kill and 1997’s The Relic. She also starred in television series’, such as The Practice, Carnivale, Without a Trace and NCIS: Los Angeles. She was born in Morristown, NJ.
Ali Larter: Cherry Hill
Ali Larter was born and raised in Cherry Hill, NJ. Her breakthrough movie role was in 1999’s Varsity Blues and Drive me Crazy. She also starred in 2000’s Final Destination, 2001’s American Outlaws, Legally Blonde and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. In 2003 she starred in Final Destination 2, 2004’s Three Way, 2005’s Confess and A Lot Like Love, 2007’s Marigold and Resident Evil: Extinction, 2008’s Crazy, 2009’s Obsessed, 2010’s Resident Evil: Afterlife and 2011’s UFO.
Piper Perabo: Toms River
Piper Perabo is an actress who grew up in Toms River, NJ. She starred in films like 1998’s Single Spaced, 2000’s Coyote Ugly, 2001’s Lost and Delirious, 2002’s Followers, 2003’s The I Inside and Cheaper by the Dozen, 2004’s Perfect Opposites, 2005’s The Cave, 2006’s First Snow and The Prestige, 2007’s Because I Said So and 2009’s Sordid Things. She also guest-starred on TV shows like House and Law and Order: Criminal Intent and currently took on the lead role in the TV series Covert Affairs.
