It’s fair to say that actress Jennifer Freeman certainly doesn’t look threatening beside her basketball star husband, Earl Watson. While the cute 24-year-old cast member of family-friendly sitcom “My Wife and Kids” strikes a squeaky-clean image on TV, the 6-foot-tall Watson is apparently the victim of spousal abuse.
According to TMZ, Watson filed for divorce after alleging that Freeman grabbed him, bit his arm and chest, and drew blood, eventually attempting to strike him with an iron. What provoked Freeman’s violent attack? According to the legal papers filed by Watson, Freeman grew angry when Watson checked suspicious text messages she had received after 11 p.m..
Perhaps filed too hastily, Watson withdrew the divorce petition and has reconciled with Freeman, according to comments made by Watson’s lawyer to TMZ. Considering that the couple have been married for over a year and are currently raising a 10-month-old daughter, Watson’s about-face is understandable.
Hollywood is no stranger to domestic violence, and many high-profile celebrities have seen their own spousal abuse incidents become the focus of media and tabloids. These incidents have sometimes led to messy divorces, made all the more public by the media attention that celebrity abuse stories attract.
Actor Charlie Sheen’s consistent track record as a Hollywood bad boy has put him into trouble, and the media spotlight, so often that his very first run-ins with the law seem a distant memory. Most recently, the “Two and a Half Men” star was arrested on Christmas day 2009 on charges of domestic abuse against his wife, Brooke Mueller. After spending the holiday in jail, and ultimately pleading guilty to the case’s assault charge on Aug. 2, 2010, Sheen’s plea deal traded more jail time for rehab, probation, and anger management.
While no divorce proceedings have been filed, if the past really is prologue, then things don’t look good for Sheen’s marriage to Mueller. Sheen split with actress Kelly Preston, his fiancée at the time, after accidentally shooting her in the arm in 1990. His marriage to actress Denise Richards was particularly messy. Richards filed for divorce while pregnant with their third daughter, alleging drug abuse, assault, and continued threats of violence from Sheen.
The perennial Hollywood ne’er do well, Sheen is an extreme example when it comes to spousal abuse and messy marriages. Still, history bodes ill for the long-term marriage prospects between Freeman and Watson. The NBA star seemed to be acting in good faith when he quickly withdrew his divorce petition in an effort to reconcile and salvage his marriage.
Nevertheless, when it comes to young, famous, and attractive married celebs, the stakes rarely seem as high as they do for the average husband and wife. After all, even Sheen seemed to have no problem quickly settling into new relationships.
